Mobile homes constructed prior to 1975 did not follow Standard Building Codes. You may be required to optain a building or remodeling permit. This can be a "Do-It' yourself project. Research, document & map all phases of this project:
- Removal of the aluminium siding and fasteners
- Disposal of the disgarded material
- Repair any damage (dry rot, structual, etc.)
- Replace anything that is NOT up to code
- Installation
- Clean up

Mobile homes built prior to 1975 were constructed on an assembly line in layers. Typically the process starts with the chassis(wheels, axles, metal frame), then the floor system(floor joist, subfloor and main floor). Next the utilities. Then the prefab exterior and enterior walls. Finally the a prefab roof (ceiling, joist, insulation, metal exterior). The wall studs are typically a 2 by 3. Enterior walls are covered with wood paneling. The insulation under the floor and in the walls/ceilings are sparse. 200 amp service panel (breakers or fuses). The electrical wiring made of aluminium for low voltage and copper for high voltage. Electric forced air furnence. Electric water heater.
The walls are also built in layers. Remove the windows & doors first before removing the aluminium panels. Remove all fasteners. Then the windows, doors, and panels can be removed. Make individual piles to stack the discarded materials.
Example:
- Recycling (panels, wiring, window frames)
- Burn (dry rot wood, subflooring, etc.)
- Land fill (non-recyclable, fasteners, putty tape)

As you're removing the material look for signs of dry rot, structual damage, condition of vapor barrier and insulation.

Replacement material:
- T1-11, 4" o/c wood siding
- Double pane slide windows
- 1 insulated, single light exterior door
- 5lbs of wood siding screws
The T1-11 siding installs quickly with the sheets 4' by 8'. On this mobile home has exterior walls that a 7' tall. Because the wall stud spacing isn't all ways 12", 16" or 18" o/c, you may have to install nailers. Refer to your area's building codes for the nailing patter/spacing.

Before applying a stain, allow the siding to weather. This will allow the panels to stabalize and hold the stain better. Once the stain has been applied, you may reinstall the exterior fixtures and trim.
