Day Six:

It was a very cold morning.  The campsite was cold and we were camped at 7000 feet.  To begin our hike we had to drive up to 10,000 feet.  So we dressed warmly, knowing that at some point we would have to shed some of our clothing.

Our hike would take us down into the Haleakala basin where the volcanoes once erupted.  We started at 8:30 AM and hiked downhill for 90 minutes.  We reached the first of the volcanic cinder cones.  We sat for twenty minutes admiring the different shades of volcanic rock.  We then started the upward climb.  This was very difficult.  We stopped for a water break every 15 minutes.  It took us over 200 minutes to reach our car.   Once we were near our car, bugs attacked us.

After cleaning ourselves off and putting on bug spray we drove to the summit.  It was a beautiful day and we could see the Ocean far below us.

We then returned to our campsite and rearranged our bags for the flight home.  After repacking we drove down the mountain for dinner.  We ate at the Kula Lodge and had a great dinner.  We both ordered the fish of the day cooked with a macadamia nut batter.  Wow, it was great.   We then returned to the campsite.
