The Next Step

Alone. I am all alone. Finally, after nineteen years of wading through grade, intermediate and high school, I'm finally at the pinnacle of my educational tenure. Although my past may not show it, I'm entirely ready for this next phase. At least, I think I am. I'd like to hope I am. Oh phuk, I don't know what I'm talking about. When do I ever know? ^_^

As far as my first impressions of college are, there are far too many to count. I could worry about so many different things. Am I going to get along with my room-mate. Are my classes going to be ass hard? Are the professors going to be even harder? What about the Asian population? The parties, are they any good? Will the campus network be fast enough for me? And of course, the all important one...how are the women going to be?

I suppose the answers have all come to me. In one form or another. For one thing, my room-mate rocks. He's from a small town an hour away from UNC. A former jock (he played varsity football, basketball & baseball). We get along well, especially because we have agreements on everything. The hall that I'm living in is really nice too. Perhaps not as nice as the other Central Campus dorms such as Sabin, Gordon & Hansen-Willis, but it's got billiards and ping-pong tables in our lower lounge. At least it's not as ghetto as the dorms up in West Campus. The Central Campus dorms were all recently renovated and we have air-conditioning and everything else we could need. However, the West Campus halls are permanently stuck in the '70s complete with linoleum floors and cramped drab living space, not to mention the lack of air-conditioning.

Classes? Well, I do believe I can do well in all my classes. They are not any more difficult than at Punahou, plus I lack the competition and devotion that the Punahou atmosphere had. (Damn all those honor students making me look bad.) My Psychology class is looking to be my most difficult, because it compares to the a level beyond AP psychology that high school offered. My other pseudo-difficult class is my Visual Basic Programming class which I'm looking forward to because it would allow me to make internet-based applications and I can share some of my works on line. Unfortunately, the professor has an extremely thick Chinese accent. Frick, I'm mostly Chinese and I can barely understand him, I wonder what the Colorado students are thinking. My composition class will be a breeze due to the writing that I already do for CCC and other sites like Bolt & AsianAvenue. Plus it's taught by a grad student, who's an absolute riot, he's extremely funny and sarcastic. My Macroeconomics class is probably the biggest joke of the year. The professor is slightly flaky and believes that it may be too difficult for a freshman. Well, I'm a freshman...just one who got an A in economics and has a good education and is not oblivious to everything that goes around him.

Asian population? Not too bad, there's some lookers but I'd rather be at home. As far as friends go, I've got quite an interesting group going so far. It's composed of about half Hawaii students (Hawaii also happens to be the second largest population next to Colorado at UNC) and a melting pot of others. First there's Dash, my good friend from Punahou. Hard to describe him, he's turned a new leaf (remarkably so) and has chosen to abstain from many college activities (that aren't entirely curricular). Then there's Lyndsey, a former cheerleader from Millilani HS, & Lindsey, a former catholic school-girl who grad'ed from Kailua HS. Eric, a skating trumpet player from South Dakota who loves spelunking. David, another Trumpet player & Eagle Scout from Lakewood (the largest suburb in Denver), CO. Jeff, a guitar player from CO. Matt, a former Football captain from CO. Jen, a partier from Pearl City HS. Jenn, another grad from Millilani HS. Ryan, a pseudo-jock from Maryknoll who lives in Pearl City. Dawn, a former cheerleader (who happens to be Lyndsey's roomie) from CO. Finally, there's me...basically everything in-between from Kaimuki.

The parties? Well, I should've gone to one last week with Lindsey, Jen & Jenn but I opted not to. I decided to play capture the flag...which was a waste of time and I wish I could've gone to the party. I'm definitely going to the next one. Eric's friend Timmy was supposed to have something go down last Saturday, but he wasn't home, so another opportunity got shot down. However, David took me, Eric, Lindsey & Lyndsey to Denver on Friday night and it was loads of fun.

Campus network? Plenty fast. I still haven't figured out where I peak because I've d/led as much as 500 kbps and the ping for CS and other games is quite good as well.

The ladies? Again...not too many for my tastes. But let's just say that the ratio of girls to guys is 4:1. I kid you not. I'll find somebody eventually. ^_^
