Remember the Saving Private Ryan? You know, the opening sequence
on the Normandy Beach? Yeah. It was pretty intense wasn't it?
German pillboxes with mounted turrets as American frontline troops
got cut to pieces as they heroically stormed the beach. Tom Hanks
being strong willed and intelligent, a far shot from Big huh.
Soldiers screaming in pain as the camera shakes around like you're
on the beach as well. One of the greatest moments in American
history. This is probably one of the greatest moments in cinema
history. Now its a great moment in gaming history thanks to Allied
Assault.
The
newest installation to the Medal of Honor series, MoH finally gets
to taste the blood of the PC. You play a young officer who has
been recruited to do reconnaissance work for the Allied forces.
Your missions bring you from France to the Mediterranean to
Germany itself. Armed to the teeth, you fight on all fronts in
secrecy and in full military glory. Taking part in the Normandy
invasion is by far the best moments of the game.
Missions vary from level to level and the ways to which you
accomplish goals is original and intriguing as well. From the
simplicity of the Normandy invasion to just survive, to scuttling
Nazi artillery, stealing documents in disguise from a German
U-Boat and even protecting a bridge (once again, ala Saving
Private Ryan), the missions are fun and deep complete with a great
feel of realism.
Speaking
of realism, every facet adds to the atmosphere of realism in this
game. From the sounds of the M1 Garand slide clip shooting out of
the rifle to the screams and explosions around you. Even your
allies react intelligently and well in given situations, calling
for backup and screaming in pain as they crumble to the ground.
The Nazi soldiers are no slouch either, far from the Satanic
soldiers in Wolfenstein. But sometimes the AI is too good. Due to
the foliage and surroundings, sometimes its next to impossible to
see a Nazi sniper as he takes pot shots at you. They can see
through the foliage perfectly fine, but of course, you can't.
Again, its a graphical gem from the modeling of each firearm to
the beautiful landscapes around you. Model movement is superb
along with the movements and realism of the environs. The crumbled
French towns that you wander through project an eerie reality
which means that you're playing a hell of a game.
The sounds are great, as I said before that make the game seem
incredibly real. Each gun has a distinct feel and sound to it. I
love the M1 Garand simply because of the real feel to it and great
job at sound recording. I like it much more than the M40 Tommy
Gun, which I wish they'd give to you a little less. Even the sound
of tank treads creeping up to you makes you shake in your issued
boots in hopes that the pilot doesn't spot you.
Throw
in a great multiplayer that includes objective based missions, and
this game can't get any better. Each mission is as original as the
game and it makes it much more intense playing against other
players than against the AI controlled Nazis.
In the full picture, its a classic title that is worthy of every
praise it receives. I was satisfied with the game after I played
the Normandy missions, and it continued to stay interesting and
challenging. Calling in for airstrikes is an interesting facet and
a challenge when you need to protect the bridge. Realistic? Yes.
Although short, I loved it for every moment it provided me.
Final Verdict: 9/10
