In a Nutshell

Wings of Honneamise is a spectacle of a movie about a young man who dreams of flying, but is too lazy. When he meets a young woman who sparks his interest and insight, she creates a yearning for him to become the first man into space.

The Review

In an alternate world, Shirotsugh Lhadatt dreams of becoming a pilot ... but his grades weren't good enough, so he became a member of the Royal Space Force instead. A General whose dream is to put the first man into space leads the Space Force. The Space Force, however, is a laughing stock and a career dead end, so its members aren't exactly the cream of the crop. After an encounter with Leiquinni Nondelaiko, a very religious girl, Shiro is inspired to volunteer to be the first astronaut. The movie details the growth of Shiro's character, as well as the trials - both political and technical - which culminate in the launch of the first manned rocket.

As Shirotsugh's life progresses, we see him move from a lazy member of the Royal Space Force, one of the old veterans who hasn't died in an experimental flight, to a political figure in a time of international turmoil. He represents everything that rebels fight against and his life becomes in danger. We watch as his relationship with Leiquinni grows and prospers and moves from a friendship to something more intimate. And we finally watch as his dream of flight becomes more of a reality than anything he could have ever thought possible, despite the many trials and tribulations he goes through.

Honneamise struck me as a film that is about dreaming. Simply through the introduction, we see a young Shirotsugh wandering through the snow as he watches fighter planes take off from an aircraft carrier. It's here where his dream is fathomed and through the film we watch as it steadily changes and becomes something that can be felt. As an astronaut, Shirotsugh becomes an example of patriotism, strength and determination.

The animation, as with most films is top notch. The depth of the world is absolutely incredible. The animators spent a long time drawing each and every cell, paying attention to the smallest details making movements crisp and well done. The design is equally good, especially the landscapes that the story takes place. From the open fields where Leiquinni lives, to the awesome base that the Royal Space Force launches Shirotsugh into space from. It's got a great musical score, especially when Shirotsugh flies in an airplane for the first time.

This is a classic anime film that shouldn't be missed. A GAINAX classic that rivals the best that Studio Ghibli has to offer. Its originality is incredible along with the many things that make anime the enjoyable art that it is. A film about dreaming, and those who never thought it could be possible.

Slacker's Final Thoughts

Magical and gripping, Honneamise achieves a benchmark in animation and story with a great cast of characters and a dramatic story from the get go.
