In a Nutshell

Kintaro Oe is 25 years old and wanders from job to job throughout Japan. While his perverted mind gets seems to distract him from time to time, he is eager to learn about every facet of the world around him. Golden Boy follows Kintaro's lessons of life as he travels through the various town picking up temp jobs and how he escapes conflict.

The Review

Golden Boy, is the defining line of ecchi-comedy. There are so many sexual references that it's nearly hentai but without the sex. But our hero, Kintaro Oe is surprisingly intelligent and enjoyable to watch. While his perverted thoughts and antics get him into tight spots, his intelligence shines in the end of every episode and he is able to learn about life. Armed with his bicycle and notebook, Kintaro uses his wit to his advantage and while he never gets any of the girls, he affects each one deeply.

The animation in Golden Boy is decent because it strays from using typical animation tricks such as chibi-characters. This is very effective because Kintaro is very passionate about the things that he does. While he always begins work not knowing anything, he ends being on top and carefully executing things to make them his own.

The humor in this is absolutely hysterical from typical slapstick to references or even Kintaro's stupid obsession with toilets. But the way he gets out of situations is the best, usually out witting people when he needs to, he'll sometimes get beaten up or even get looked down upon in order to resolve a conflict. He never wants the people he is helping to know that he is helping them out, so he tries his hardest to make them realize things for themselves.

All in all, it's a fun ride with a great set of characters. I wish the series was much longer because Kintaro is such a memorable character in anime-comedies.

Slacker's Final Thoughts

A lot of fun can be found in this series, but perhaps not if you don't enjoy ecchi-humor because Golden Boy relies on this a lot. If you're up for a ride, go see it. It's surprisingly intelligent and you just can't not like Kintaro.
