Devil
May Cry
Capcom
Action
PlayStation 2
Whatever happened to simple, action-packed games where all you did
was beat the living crap out of enemies. Remember Final Fight?
A truly original game by Capcom where all you did was beat up
thugs with your truly bad-ass martial arts skills. Other games
have tried, but have only been able to mirror the feel of Final
Fight, The Bouncer was great, but just seemed pointless
after a while. Capcom has returned to their classic ideals
combining the nonsense game-play of Final Fight and the
depth, mystery and intrigue of Resident Evil. Devil May
Cry is a great hybrid combining vast dark environments 'ala Resident
Evil with a superb combat system rivaling any straight up
fighter and simple beat 'em up fun like Final Fight.
To
make things a little hokey, but at the same time extremely
fun, you play Dante. Dante is the son of Sparda, a legendary demon
warrior who rose against the Hell-spawn to destroy evil that
wished to leak its way into the realm of Earth. Armed with swords
and firearms, Dante wages a quest against evil, to dig up the
murderers of his brother Virgil and his mother. When a girl pays
him a visit at his store, he finds himself on the right track,
Trish actually knew of his past.
Devil May Cry is an absolute gem of graphical prowess. The
gothic levels are dark and twisted as Dante explores a castle,
sewers eventually ends up in a realm of Hell in search of answers.
Dante's movements are precise and deadly as he destroys ghosts,
zombies and demons that portal into the world. Equally as majestic
as Dante are the many enemies and bosses that he encounters
throughout the 24 levels.
Game-play
is easy as pie. One button controls the sword and another controls
his firearms while the analog stick allows one to move Dante with
ease and makes execution of his special techniques simple. Because
Dante is half demon, he has the ability to enter a demon like
state where his abilities are enhanced and special powers can be
used at a whim. Combination of the hand to hand combat and
projectile firearms is seemless as Dante goes from slashing to
firing off his pistols and vice versa.
Endless fun is what Devil May Cry is all about. The
intriguing story line helps mesh the various levels together and
makes for interesting cut-scenes. But combat is what kills here.
Simply amazing as anybody can button jam their way through the
game, but not even be bored because of repetition.
Final Verdict: 8/10
