Timing Advance

Advancing the timing causes the ignition system to spark earlier in the combustion cycle.  When the spark occurs too late (the timing is retarded), by the time the air-fuel mixture ignites, the piston will have already started moving back down, and you will lose compression.

When you advance the timing then you will have to use 92-93 octane gas.  If not then your engine will knock and your chances of detonation will increase.

*To advance the timing you basically disconnect the coolant temp. sensor located near the thermostat housing.

*loosen the 1/2" nut directly under the distributor until you can rotate the distributor.

*start the car and turn the distributor cap clockwise until you hear your engine ping slightly, then turn it back very slightly.

The other way to do it is with a timing light and the crank pulley marks but this way is easier.  Advancing the timing is good for about 5hp.  The stock timing is set to 12 so you can set it to 15 or 16 degrees.
