THE JAPANESE GARDEN
Moonlight spreading across the snow
A giant blanket without a fringe.
Snowbirds perching upon the lanterns
Gaily singing their winter song.
Bamboo reaching toward the moonlit sky,
Cardinals in brilliant contrast.
Darting among the swaying branches,
As though on a bright midsummer day.
Butterflies floating with the gentle breeze,
Water sparkling, flowing swiftly below.
From the bridge, the scene unfolding -
A midsummer dream on a midwinter day?
A perfect dream with a perfect cast,
A paradox of light, of shadows, of seasons,
Of bright warm sunlight and velvet night
A mystical moment frozen in time!
