John William Coltrane

Instead of listing a number of facts about John Coltrane, I would like to take this opportunity to express what this man meant to me. I was turned on to 'Trane way back in my second year of high school, when I was the drummer in a small jazz ensemble. The two saxophone players in the band would always be playing these intense and complex on the stereo, in hopes of at some point being able to duplicate the sound on their own horns. I wanted to investigate these CDs a little further -- so I asked who it was that they were listening to. They said "John Coltrane". At the time, the name sounded familiar, but I really knew nothing about the man and his music. The tenor sax player recommended 'Giant Steps', so I went out and bought it. Ever since the first note was played on that CD, another Coltrane follower was born.

I am not the hugest fan of Coltrane, but I do own quite a few of his recordings. If it wasn't for the expensive nature of CDs (especially jazz), I'd own quite a few more! I think the most heart-warming and spiritualistic recordings (at least that I own) would have to be 'A Love Supreme'. If you do not own this CD, I suggest you go out and buy it! Every time I put it on, I feel as if I have been transported to another land. The quality of his playing, and the structure of the pieces is enough to make your mind wander aimlessly (which is a good thing!). Not only does 'Trane put his heart and soul into this recording, but every song he has ever played.

John Coltrane is missed by many, including myself. Not only was he a man of superior musical talent, but he has been, and always will be, an inspiration to all.
