| Barf Ranks the Ryes |

| Being the selfless, giving person that he is, Barf has undertaken a task of momentous proportions. Barf has tested every Canadian Rye whiskey on the market and has compiled the results here to aid everyone in their Rye purchases. The ranking is based on taste and smoothness. To make sure that the ranking stays fair, Barf is using the universal mix, Coca-Cola. The following are his results: 10. Alberta Premium Two words: Premium Shit. The word "premium" is usually used to denote something of superior quality, but this whiskey does not meet this standard. However, it WILL get you mighty messed up!! 9. Wiser's De Luxe Big disappointment with this one, Don't let the 10 years of age fool you...it tastes like it never aged a year! Neither smooth nor tasteful, you'd avoid this one if you were "wise". 8. Canadian Mist I originally purchased this whiskey because it comes from my area (Collingwood, On.). It has a bit of a bite, but after a few swigs, it tastes just fine! Not very smooth, but it has a nice flavour. 7. V.O. (Seagrams) I still remember receiving a Christmas gift from my Nana which was stuffed inside a cylindrical V.O. container. I was only 8 years old but I knew that if my Nana drank it, it had to be good! And good it is. Relatively smooth and tasty to boot. Seagram's sure knows how to make their rye! 6. Canadian Club (Walker) Let me begin by saying that I could write a novel about this fine whiskey. Canadian Club was always there for me during my experimentation years when I needed a liquor to fall back on. It has always treated me well --only once have I thrown up while drinking C.C. (although I'm pretty sure it was the beer I was drinking after the bottle was polished off). I began my second year at U of T by purchasing the 3 litre Texas Mickey, and in no time it was gone. Since I've ranked the ryes according to smoothness and flavour it would be criminal to place Canadian Club in the top five. If the ranking was done according to memories and happiness though, there would be no question who the winner would be. 5. '83 (Seagrams) Surprisingly tasty and smooth!! I must admit that I wasn't expecting much when I dragged '83 from the LCBO, but I found out only a few minutes later what I'm sure not many people out there know! I'd like to take this opportunity to put the word out on the street: Seagrams '83 is moderately smooth and as a warning, it is extremely easy to consume! 4. Crown Royal (Seagrams) The "rich man's drink". If I did not care about the completeness of this list, I would exclude Crown Royal from it It is, as everybody knows, very smooth and has a beautiful texture. However, I will never purchase Crown Royal again until I become a yuppy-assed asshole who drives a Beamer. There are just too many disgusting connotations associated with this whiskey, but if you want a safe and a tasty drink go ahead and take the plunge - just don't let me catch you. 3. Canadian Club - Classic 12 year (Walker) Mmmmmmmmm. I almost had a heart attack the first time I saw this extraordinarily magnificent bottle on the shelf. It called out my name.....and I answered,...and answered gain and again! The 12 year has a great body and a smooth quality. You'll always be welcome in this Club, and believe me, you'll never want to leave! I must make mention of the new 15 year old Club that you can now buy. It's even grander than the 12 year (duh,...who would have thought?). Apparently, it's only available in limited quantities. so go out and get it immediately if you haven't tried it yet. 2. Alberta Springs Wow. Ooooooooo...SHIT! Simply irresistable. When you take one sip, there's no turning back! A genuinely exquisite taste, and BOY is it smooth! I would have to say that Alberta Springs is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century! On a side note, Alberta Springs should win an award for one of the best whiskey stories on a bottle. 1. Gibson's Finest - Sterling Edition This is given the title "Finest" for an obvious reason. In fact, I feel that Gibson's is being a tad redundant in that once you have a little sip, you immedieately realize that the whiskey should be called "Finest". I must tell you about my first run-in with Gibson's Finest. It was in the summer of '96 and I was on a camping expedition through the Niagara Espcarpment. We set up camp, after the sun had vanished, with the use of only a flashlight; the ground was wet and I was cold. And I knew that it was inevitable that I'd be called upon to hunt down some firewood. It was at this point that I cracked the Sterling open and took a swig, knowing full well that my body would shudder with its potency. It never happened. Absolutely NO bite. As the sun began to reapear, there was still no bite and I decided it might be time to stop drinking. If you haven't tried this rye, you'll be amazed with its smoothness and very full body. A little on the pricey side, but what's another few bucks for a superior whiskey -- the whiskey that I have chosen to be the greatest of our era! Honorable Mention -- Five Star (Seagram's) Out of sheer respect for my Nana (the other one -- not the one mentioned earlier), I have decided to include the good old Five Star as mentionable. Although many would prefer a smoother rye to mix with water, Nana is a large fan of this Seagram's product. |
