I've been a fan of Ry Cooder since I was in Grade 9 High School. I bought my first album of his at Sam the Record Man. It was the soundtrack to Crossroads, the most incredible Blues movie ever made. I'd heard of the guy and thought what the heck I'll buy it. To tell you the truth, at that time, I couldn't even name any of his songs! I learned to play the Blues by listening to that album. I subsequently set out to buy every Ry Cooder album thereafter! I once sent the guy a letter. My dad said 'If you really are a fan why don't you write him?'. Well, I did. Unfortunately at the time my writing skills were less than adequate. I think I said something to him like, 'I'm your biggest fan' and 'I think you're just swell!'. Needless to say I didn't get a response. It is my dream to meet the man one day, maybe even jam with him. I remember seeing the ad for a Little Village concert in Toronto. That was the last time he played in Canada, that I know of. I missed it. I'm bitter. What is it that I like about Ry Cooder you ask? I don't know. There you go, that's my answer. I've been listening to him for too long, he's become part of my music. I played Ry for a friend of mine the other day and he said it was me. His music has been a part of my life for so long and I suppose that's what Ry is to me, he's been my Guitar teacher for the past 9 years. All I had to do was listen to his albums and I picked up nearly every style! From Jazz to Blues, Reggae to Cuban, to name a few, the Guy Rocks! He'll go down in history as one of the most under-rated unappreciated musical masters!
