Magic has existed on Kryastal since its formation.  For in the beginning, the plane that would become Kryastal was composed of pure energy, the energy used to create magic.  Even though this energy, called mana, is now contained in everything and everyone, it can be drawn out to produce magic.  And this mana is virtually inexhaustible because more is constantly flowing into Kryastal from somewhere else.
Magic wasn't discovered until about the same time as the establishment of the religious cults.  These would persecute practicioners of magic, mages, for thousands of years.  Because of this persecution, mages were little in numbers and completely unorganized.  They were also intensely secretive which only served to make matters worse.
After several hundred years, the Lesser God Izneria, controller of the flow of mana into the world, had seen enough.  He appeared directly to the cults' leaders and proclaimed all mages as followers of him.  He then took a step to organize the scattered mage population by appointing a council to oversee them.  It would be known as the First Council.  It was not until the year 8135 of the First Age that mages were fully formalized into orders by the god based upon where they drew their mana from.  However, the orders largely acted independently of one another.

MAGE-ARTIFICER WAR

Nearly a millenium after the end of the wars, mages emerge from hiding offering overtures of peace and tribute to make ammends for the crimes committed by their ancestors during the wars against the artificers.  A second council with greater power and control than the first was established in the year 14001 of the First Age to rule over newly created guilds that were descendants of the original orders of mages.  The Mage Guilds Council, as it would quickly become known, had a school built for each of the five guilds by Izneria.  He spread these guild schools throughout the world in fairly remote places to ease the concerns of the general population who remembers the horrors of the ancient wars through tale and song.  Each guild would become known by the name of its particular school.

Artificers are still around, though they are not as organized as the mages.  Also they are significantly less in number than in times past, but usually every major town has a few.  The greatest numbers can be found living among the metalsmiths in the major cities of the realm.  Though, having no formal schools as in the past, the art is thriving through the tried-and-true method of apprenticeship.  Mages appear to no longer hold any animosity towards their craftsman brethren.
