Bobby Busts Loose! by David Levine
It has been seven years since Bobby Rydell first burst on the public consciousness. When Bobby came up to our office recently for a talk, it seemed hard to believe that his youthful lad was a veteran of so many years. But to see Bobby in action -- on a night club floor, on a television screen, is to recognize the true professional, a boy with a lot of talent, and the finesse to put all that talent across. He's got it all. Bobby's regular appearances on the Milton Berle show this season are the latest step in his ever climbing career. On the show he has a chance to display his versatility, to demonstrate that he is no more a rock and roll singer, but a polished performer with many a trick of his professional sleeve. Besides his singing (and Bobby is one of the few youngsters with a real voice), he offers impressions, drum solos, and a quiet but effective sense of humor. These ingredients add up to a talent that will last. Bobby is an unaffected young man who has not let fame and material success turn his head. He is still devoted to his parents and still makes his home with them. They live in Philadelphia, in a house that Bobby built with his record and film salaries. His grandmother is also a member of the household. It is a close-knit, obviously loving family, and it is a good reason for Bobby's feet-on-the ground approach to things. Bobby is completely at ease during an interview. He has a fund of delightful stories, is direct and honest in his answers. Unlike many other stars, he doesn't let his success open a gap between himself and the public. Bobby revealed that his favorite performer is Frank Sinatra. He has met Frank and recalled him as a gracious and charming man. There is little doubt that twenty years from now some young star will be saying much the same thing about Bobby Rydell. He intends to cut several records in the near future, and will continue doing club performances when time permits. It's a tight schedule and a grueling grind, but to Bobby the rewards far outweigh the troubles involved. Bobby's fans include some of the biggest names in show business: Red Skelton, Danny Thomas, and many others who spotted his talent some time ago and have seen it mature. They -- and millions of others -- will continue to follow his career with pleasure. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
