"Birdie" Costs Rydell $200,000
in Club Dates
Bobby Rydell's first motion picture proved rather extensive and expensive for the
recording and night club performer.
The 20-year-old favorite of teen-agers was signed for a starring role in he film
version of the Broadway musical "Bye Bye Birdie," which opens next Friday at the
Hollywood Paramount Theater, and was informed that he would only work eight weeks in the
production.
Instead, Rydell found himself not being able to say "bye bye" to "Bye
Bye Birdie" for 20 weeks. This lengthy stay necessitated the cancelling of some
$200,000 worth of previously scheduled night club and personal appearance dates.
However, Rydell figures he benefited double that amount in motion picture experience, a
field new to him and one in which he plans to continue.
