AN ORIGINAL AUDITION MONOLOGUE: CHARACTER: RICARDO. FOR: LATIN MALE OR FEMALE By ryan xavier I was born in a small town in Mexico not too far from the border to texas. My father was a truck driver for a beer company but many times he used his truck to drive wetbacks over the border. On one of these trips he would make more money than in the whole year driving for the beer company. But, when I was still young, he went on one of these trips and never came home. We dont know what happened to him. Maybe he was killed, thrown in jail, maybe he went to America and owns a strip joint, we just dont know. My mother was not very disappointed at this, because he was a drunk and she pretty much blamed him for ruining her life. She was a beautiful actress when she met my father after a show and her career was on the rise, but once they were married, she never acted again. I was sixteen when my father disappeared and I decided to go to America to be an actor. I did not want to end up like my mother and father, I did not want to drive the shitty little trucks and die with no money in a shitty little town so I left. I spoke very little English when I got to Los Angeles but it seemed like I was in the right place, because a lot of doors were opened to me and I had a lot of success very quickly. I was in a different tv show every day! and it was wonderful, you could eat all the food you wanted, and I got to playe many different parts. Some days I was a bum sleeping on a bench in a park, other days I was eating in a fancy restaurant. The best thing is that I got to be very close to the stars and I learned a lot of what it is to be a serious actor. Eventually I wanted to do more and to be closer to the camera, I was tired of sitting in the background always blurry in the lens and always talking without making any sounds. I began to audition for little movies and very soon I got a part in a big movie that cost 100,000 dollars to make about Mexicans crossing the border. I felt very close to my character because I had been in the real position in my real life. That was my biggest moment. Everybody told me I had a lot of talent and that I expressed the pain of my characters life with wonderful emotion, and also that I looked very good in the screen, and I knew they were right. It was only a movie for Spanish television but many Mexican people often tell me they saw me in the movie. I have to remind them but then they remember. After this, I put together a group of actors to share my ideas and to help them get the same success I have had. I feel it is good to share what you know and to help others. I tell them that it doesnt matter that there are six million actors and only six parts. I tell them to believe that they are the only one and to ignore the competition. This is what I did, and now you see what success I have had?. For my next project, I will be appearing in a play in Hollywood in a very important role. It is a nice story about some rich homosexual men who are fighting the city to let them marry. I am only in one scene, but an important one, as the Latin boy who cleans their pool. It is very symbolic of rebirth and cleaning, I think it is central to the play. But I believe that I am perfect for the role, because they needed someone who could express the necessary emotion and would look good in a little bathing suit. I knew immediately that this was a big break for me. I am still trying to convince the director to let my character speak, I think I am getting through to him. He says that my character has so much to say that if we let him talk he will never shut up. I think maybe he is right. I hope you will come and see it, because it goes to show what love and dedication to the art of acting can produce. (looks at watch) Im sorry, but I have to go now. We are serving a bar mitzvah tonight and the head chef hates it when we are late. Thank you for your time.. |
