| Napoleon Bonaparte is born in Corsica (1769-1821)
-Birth and childhood- Napoleon was born in Corsica an island off the coast of France. His family was nobles and he moved to France to begin a military career -Physical stature (Napoleonic complex)- Napoleon was a short man with a great knowledge for battle. He was only 20 and beginning to rise in the ranks. -marriage and political significance- Napoleon was married to Joesaphine his lively wife. He was a self-made political leader and took over the government. Early military successes (1796)- Napoleon's army defeats the Austrians in Northern Italy (1797)- Napoleon beat Austria and took over most of Europe. Napoleon used his brains and out smarted his opponents Treaty of Campo Formio- The treaty of campo was the sealing deal for the Austrian defeat. The Treaty also made Napoleon the greatest man in Europe at the time. 1798-1799 French extend their control- The French extended their control with the annexation of the Netherlands, Belgium, and parts of Italy and Germany. Napoleon had the largest empire in Europe now. Napoleon Fights his Egyptian campaign (1798-1799) Napoleon's invasion of Egypt/ why?- Napoleons memoirs say that he invaded Egypt for �Glory.� Napoleon attacked with 38,000 men and wanted to recreate Alexander the Great. Rosetta Stone Discovery- The Rosetta Stone was discovered by Napoleons army. The Rosetta Stone was a stone that converted greek into hyroglyphs so people could understand what the Egyptians wrote. Battle of the Pyramids- Napoleon was attacked by over 100,000 men. Napoleon took the defensive and suffered small losses and the Egyptians suffered 3,000 Lord Horatio Nelson's role (1758-1805)- Nelson won the battle of Nile and made Napoleons campaign for control of Egypt impossible. Nelson was one of the greatest admirals of all time. Battle of the Nile- The battle was one of the most crushing naval battles of all time. Nelson crushed napoleon at sea and controlled Egypt. War of the Second Coalition is fought (1798-1801) Describe the war and its participants- The war was the coalition of Europe against Napoleon and his army. The coalition was Austria, Britain, and Russia. Alliance against France- The Alliance against France was so they would be destroyed and Europe could be restored to Peace. Britain could crush France at the sea and Russia could beat them during the cold and wear them down. Napoleon's defeat of the Second Coalition- Napoleon beat the Coalition because they didn�t share a common plan. Britain wanted to crush them at sea and Russia wanted to crush the land army. Treaty of Luneville- The Treaty was between France and the Holy Roman Empire. The Austrians were defeated and finally gave up. Treaty of Amiens(1802)- France signed the treaty with Britain. The Treaty was about Britain recognizing that France was a free Republic. Napoleon Bonaparte seizes power and becomes first consul (1799)- How does he come to power?- Napoleon comes to power by using the military to force the leaders out. Napoleon was the head of the army so it was easy to become first consul The Constitution of 1799- The constitution was made but Napoleon didn�t care what he said. Napoleon ignored the constitution and did what he wanted to. Consulate- The consulate was a group of people sort of like a senate. Napoleon made a dictatorship so he could have complete and total control. |
