Icelandic wrestling; established in 1888 as an organized sport. Matches are held on a wooden floor 20' to 26' square. The "climubelti" is a leather belt with straps fastened to the thighs; wrestlers grasp each other by the belt and do not let go until a throw is completed. A wrestler loses if any portion of his body above the knee or above the elbow touches the ground or if both hands touch the ground. The match is declared a draw if both men continue to hold onto the belts as one falls. Movements in glimae are called "tricks" and include body trick, heel trick, leg trick, beginning of the knee trick, side throw down trick, hip trick, and split trick. Glimae championships are held annually in Iceland and the sport appears to be gaining popularity.
Icelandic Wrestling breeds a particularly resilient fighter, with a strong devotion to physical labor and (to outsiders suprising) a strong spiritual side. These wrestlers often display a strange wisdom and attentiveness to the spirit that is rare among practitioners of the wrestling arts, and often studies of Runic writings and symbols are involved in the higher levels of training in the style.
