The Storm Lake Parade of Flags began in 1973 with the
Daughters of the American Revolution, on the lawn of the Buena Vista County Courthouse. Since, over 800 flags have been dedicated in memory of Veterans from Buena Vista County. Every Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veteran's Day these flags are proudly flown on the courthouse lawn.
The purpose behind this website was to honor those Veteran's that have made the ultimate sacrifice, or even just served their country. The veteran's names listed in the Veteran's page are real veteran's who were honored during the Memorial Day Ceremony in 2014.
While developing this site I took into account that the target audience will probably be an older crowd. Being a veteran myself, and attending these cermonies each year and helping put up and take down the flags. I have seen the audience that attends and would be interested in this site. So I thought to use easy to read fonts and colors, sticking to a patriotic theme of Red / White / Blue which seemed fitting due to what the site is actually about.
I believe all of the links to navigate around the site are self explanitory all of the links take users to pages about what the link says. I thought that my use of actual pictures from the event worked well with the site, and that the imbedded video of amazing grace / taps worked well with the page dedicated to the veteran's that have passed.
I would like to be able to take this site a step further and get a full list of the veteran's that have flags, and add them to a database that can be searched from the website, add SSL encryption to allow actual purchases of flags And maybe make the site useful for the actual parade of flags.
This website is dedicated to all of those from Buena Vista County Iowa, who have served their country.
