The humid summer air felt thick and moist against his skin, clinging to his clothing as he stared at the fantastic sight before him. "I never imagined such a beautiful place could exist," he whispered, the awe of nature so overwhelming, he had trouble catching his breath, coughing the moisture from his lungs. "You said you've been here before?" "Yeah," she told him, only paying him the slightest of mind, her eyes on the water below. She glanced at the spray of the water, approaching it, seemingly careless with her steps. "I trained here with my father for a week. I almost cried when we had to leave back to town for supplies." "I can see why," he said taking a step toward her, a bit cautious with his steps, making sure his bare feet held to the slick rock before he took another. "I saw this place in a dream before I ever came here," she told him, her voice low, almost seductive. "It was strange, seeing something for real that I only thought existed in my dreams. When I was sad or lonely, I came here in my mind, and when I found it for real, I thought I was meant to stay here." He stared at her, unsure what to make of her story. "You're amazing." She turned her head at this, smiling sweetly in the starlight. "Turn your back. I want to surprise you with something." Complying, he turned his back with a satisfied grin, and then heard her shifting out of her wet clothing. His heart skipped a beat... "Ok, look." He turned, and for a brief instant, he saw her naked silhouette against a wash of starlight, and then like a shadow she disappeared. With his breath caught tightly in his lungs, he lunged for the side of the falls, his eyes bulging with fear as he searched for her. Only catching a glimpse of her as she plunged into the water, his breath still held, he failed to gasp. For five horrified seconds, he stared hopelessly at the lake below, not sure what to do, when her tiny image broke the surface of the water, her arms waving up at him, the sudden, entrancing, beautiful laughter barely audible through the roar of the falls. "You're crazy, Kimiko Nishiyama!" he yelled down to her, his voice a crashing echo beside the waterfall.
