Introduction
This page will teach a complete dummy everything about rivalries, from what they are, how it works and how to make one.
What's a Rivalry?
Go take a look at The Elite's Rankings. A rivalry is just like that, but you control the amount of people in it and how it looks. It's basically a mini-Elite - for a small group of people who want to compete against each other in Perfect Dark or Goldeneye and see who has the best times out of just them.
Getting the Updater
If you don't already have one, send me an Instant Message at YourElitenessPD (AIM) and ask for one.
Finding a Place to Host it
If you're a computer whiz, go make a new account at Angelfire. If not, read on.
We need a place to store the pages online. Go to Angelfire and click the Sign Up button at the top. Angelfire is a web-hosting service. You don't have to pay anything to have your site hosted. On the bottom left it says "Try Angelfire for FREE!" with a Sign Up link below it. Click it. Now you have to enter details about the account you're making. In the first section, choose a text phrase from the box that looks good. I personally like "games5", as it relates to what I'm doing. In the box beside it, write the name of your site with no spaces. If it's a rivalry, write "myrivalry" or something. Then choose a password and type it in below that.
In the next section, fill in some info about yourself. Put false info if you want, but make sure the email address is real. Now scroll down the rest of the page and untick all the boxes. If they are ticked, Angelfire sends spam to your email inbox. Enter the number into the box at the bottom and click I Agree.
It should say "Step 2: Confirmation" If it doesn't, it'll probably have something wrong with the info you submitted in the last page, and you'll have to correct it. Fix the info until you get this page. Once that's done, click the link to activate your account and start building.
Was that hard? Well, we never have to go there again! Click Log Out at the top of the screen.
Building the Roster
The roster is a list of all the people in your rivalry and some info about them. It can be found in the main folder, in the roster.txt file. Open it. If it asks what program to open it with, choose Notepad.
Your roster will have some people in there by default. Notice how there are two enters between each person's info. To make this easy, I'll write what the roster says in red, and my comments about it in this bluish colour.
1 - This is the number of the person. Make them 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. They can be in any order. They can even be letters, but we won't go that complex.
Your Eliteness - This is the player's alias name, or the name that will go on the rankings. Put in whatever they want it to be.
YE - This is the player's initials. Their initials go in the World Record table, if they hold a record (same for the Legend table).
Ryan Dwyer - This is the player's real name. If the player doesn't want his/her real name known, just put three question marks. This appears on the roster page.
#DB2981 - This is the colour code of the player's name. A list of good colours and their codes can be found here. You could also just write "red" or "blue", etc.
http://www.geocities.com/ryandwyer2000/pdtimes.html - This is the player's times page. Make sure the http:// is there, or it won't work. If you need help making a times page, go here.
[email protected] - The player's email address. Put three question marks if the player doesn't want it revealed.
PAL - This is the system the player uses. Put either PAL or NTSC, it doesn't matter.
Note: In a GoldenEye updater, the roster is ordered like this: Number, real name, initials, colour, page, email, system. There is no alias name.
I bet you're wondering what that -1 is in the roster. Anyone below the -1 is banned. Move their info below the -1 to ban them. You could just delete their info, but doing it this way saves their info for later, if you want to unban them.
Save and close that file.
Telling the Updater Where to Put the Pages
In the same folder as the roster.txt file, there's a file called upload.txt. Open it.
Don't change anything in this file except for two things. The username and password. The username looks something like "games5/ye", and I've hopefully changed the password to just "password" before sending you the updater. Change those to your Angelfire username and password you made above. Save and close that file.
Updating!
Open cel.bat in that main folder. A black window should appear with text. Watch as the text moves up. Mmm... fascinating. After a while it will say "Goodbye, have several nice days...". Close it when it does that, by clicking the X in the top right. Hopefully you did the roster right, and it doesn't give you an error.
But Where's my Page?
Mwa ha ha, I knew you'd ask that. To find out where your page is, figure it out with the below example.
www.angelfire.com/ + username + /elite.htm
So if your username is games5/ksyerivalry, your page will be www.angelfire.com/games5/ksyerivalry/elite.htm.
How do I edit the background HTML source?
I knew you wouldn't want "Australian Elite" written at the top. I'll arrange this into steps.
1) Open Notepad. That's Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
2) Click File > Open. In the Files of Type box, choose "all files". Find your updater folder and open the elite.bak file.
3) This is the HTML source code for the page. With a bit of HTML knowledge, you can edit it to display what you want. Just don't change the *** or the &&& found in there. Those are insertion points for the updater.
4) Save and close the file. Update again.
Wait! There's a Problem Not Explained on this Page!
