==== FlashAdapter Software ====

The following provides basic information about the FlashAdapter
software. This document is a little long, but we encourage you to read
all the way through it. The FlashAdapter software is a complicated
package and this document contains a great deal of information that
you may find helpful. This document contains the following sections:

1) Disclaimer

2) Registration

3) Getting the complete software

4) Documentation

5) Installation

6) Known Issues

7) What's Included

==== INTRODUCTION ====

This distribution contains the Kopsis FlashAdapter software - a
collection of applications and driver software for 100% FlashAdapter
compatible Springboard modules that allows you to use flash memory
cards with your Visor.

To use this software you must have purchased or built a FlashAdapter
compatible Springboard module. For more information about FlashAdapter
compatible Springboard modules, visit http://kopsisengineering.com.
This software is not intended for use with any other Springboard
module nor is it intended to work on any devices other than the
Handspring Visor family of products.

This release of Kopsis' FlashAdapter software features a new
application from Kopsis called VFSHelper. VFSHelper is a PalmOS 4.0
compliant virtual file system manager for the FlashAdapter. For more
information about VFS, see the "What's Included" section below.

For a complete list of changes for this release (and past releases),
see the file "history.txt" included with your software CD-ROM or
download.

==== DISCLAIMER ====

To use the FlashAdapter software, you must agree to the following
terms:

IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR DISTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE TO ANY PARTY
FOR DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES
ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF THIS SOFTWARE, ITS DOCUMENTATION, OR ANY
DERIVATIVES THEREOF, EVEN IF THE AUTHORS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE
POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE.

THE AUTHORS AND DISTRIBUTORS SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM ANY WARRANTIES,
INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND
NON-INFRINGEMENT. THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" BASIS, AND
THE AUTHORS AND DISTRIBUTORS HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO PROVIDE
MAINTENANCE, SUPPORT, UPDATES, ENHANCEMENTS, OR MODIFICATIONS.

If you do not agree to these terms, discontinue use of the software
immediately and remove it from your Visor.

==== REGISTRATION ====

User's of this software are encouraged to register with
Kopsis. Registration allows free downloading of the complete software
distribution as well as all future updates. Registration is free and
doesn't require any personal information other than an email address.

To register, use the "Registration" button in FAUtil to get your
registration ID and number, then use that information to complete the
online registration form at
http://kopsisengineering.com/register_sw.html

==== GETTING THE COMPLETE SOFTWARE ====

If you are using a plug-and-play FlashAdapter compatible Springboard
module, you already have all the FlashAdapter software installed on
your module. However, you may still want to download the complete
FlashAdapter software package from Kopsis' website. Downloading the
complete package will get you not only the latest version of the
software, but also the FlashAdapter User's Manual and a number of
optional third-party applications that can be used with the
FlashAdapter software.

Register your FlashAdapter software (see above) then go to
http://kopsisengineering.com/download.html and download the software
package for your adapter.

==== DOCUMENTATION ====

Complete documentation for this software is available in the form of a
50+ page User's Manual. The manual is provided as a PDF file with this
software distribution. To view the User's Manual, use Adobe Acrobat
Reader to open the file users_manual.pdf on your FlashAdapter software
CD-ROM or the directory where you extracted your electronic copy.

Please keep in mind that because the FlashAdapter software adds so
many new capabilities to the Visor, using it is more complicated than
many other PalmOS applications. The FlashAdapter software includes
three main applicaitons, one driver library, one OS extension
application, and a handful of support components. How to use all of
this software is not intuitively obvious and we *strongly* encourage
you to study the User's Manual before attempting to install and use
this software.

Contact information for technical assistance can be found in the
User's Manual.

==== INSTALLATION ====

Detailed installation instructions can be found in the "Installation"
chapter of the User's Manual.

==== KNOWN ISSUES ====

While every effort is made to keep this software free of defects,
there are a few issues that could not be resolved in time for this
release. Those issues are as follows:

1) Filenames on the flash card with non-ASCII characters created by
the Visor are not PC or Mac compatible. Similarly, filenames on the
flash card with non-ASCII characters created by a PC or Mac will not
display correctly on the Visor. In addition filenames containing
multi-byte characters are not compatible with VFSHelper.

We hope to resolve all these issues in a future release of this
software.

==== WHAT'S INCLUDED ====

VFSHelper - PalmOS 4.0 compliant VFS manager for the FlashAdapter. It
"extends" the operating system on your Visor to provide the same VFS
functions for memory card access that the Palm m500/m505, Sony Clie,
and HandEra 330 provide. With VFSHelper, applications that can access
the memory cards on those devices (and are otherwise compatible with
the version of PalmOS on your Visor) can also access the flash card in
the FlashAdapter. This gives a wide range of third-party applications
FlashAdapter support with no changes to the applications themselves.

FAFileMover - Simple application to move files between a flash card in
the FlashAdapter module and the Visor's internal RAM. FAFileMover also
allows you to create and delete subdirectories on the flash card and
perform special tasks such as launching CSpotRun via FAFileMover
"plug-ins".

FAUtil - Provides functions to test, format, and change global
settings for the flash card. This app is a much better flash
card/FlashAdapter test than the FAFileMover. If FAUtil reports errors,
FAFileMover WILL NOT WORK! FAUtil also provides information needed to
register your FlashAdapter Software and to display the version numbers
for all the major FlashAdapter software components.

CSpotRun - Freeware reader application for Aportis doc format PDB
files. This version of CSpotRun has been modified so that when
launched via the plug-in it can read the doc file directly off the
flash card without first copying it to RAM.

FAMemManager - * ONLY INCLUDED WITH SOFTWARE FOR PLUG-AND-PLAY CAPABLE
FLASHADAPTER MODULES * - This application allows you to copy or move
applications and read-only databases to and from the unused portion of
your FlashAdapter module's on-board flash memory.

FAUninstall - Small application that cleans up (deletes) old versions
of FlashAdapter software prior to installing an upgrade.

FACSpotRunPI - "Hidden" FAFileMover plug-in that starts Kopsis version
of CSpotRun from inside FAFileMover and passes the currently selected
file.

FlashAdapter Library - "Hidden" driver component that makes the magic
happen. If you have a "Classic" style FlashAdapter, always make sure
to install the library that came with the version of the FlashAdapter
software that you are trying to run.
