James McBey was born in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, in 1883. He worked at the North of Scotland Bank until 1910, when he resigned "to earn a livelihood as an artist". In 1917, he became an Official War Artist with the British Expeditionary Force in Egypt. In 1930, James McBey met his wife Marguerite (nee Loeb) in New York. In 1931, they travelled through Europe eventually settling in Morocco. In 1939, they were visiting the United States when World War 2 broke out, their passports were impounded and they were forced to remain in the U.S. for the duration of the war.
