**********

It was a quiet evening at the Masaki household for a change. In fact, the quiet was putting Tenchi on edge. Ryoko was simply scarfing down her evening meal as she usually does. Ayeka consumed her own meal at a much more dignified and refined pace, well at least she thought so. Everyone else just ate normally. Even Nobuyuki had yet to make a perverted comment which would inevitably set the girls off.

Sasami was just sitting down to share dinner with everyone else when Washu burst through the door from her lab. Eevryone stopped eating and looked up. Now the fact that Washu was present at dinner time set Tenchi’s eyebrow twitching. The large futuristic looking device she carried had Ryoko, Ayeka, Mihoshi, Kiyone, Katshito, Noboyuki, and Tenchi shuddering. Sasami just looked on in interest.

“Everyone, the greatest scientific genius in the universe has done it again!” Washu proclaimed in excitement.

Puppets appeared on her shoulders throwing confetti and singing praises to the self proclaimed greatest scientific genius in the universe.

“What is it Washu-chan?” Tenchi bravely asks, eying the device in Washu’s hands warily.

“It’s my moonbeam energy harvester 2000!”

“Um, what does it do?”

“Well…” and here Washu adopts a lecturing tone (yep, the one that causes the entire Tenchi cast to zone out) “… it converts moonbeams into an energy source that we can use to power all the electrical appliance in this house. It’s an alternative to solar energy!”

Tenchi began to relax, it didn’t sound too bad. They may actually begin to save on electricity bills. That huge TV that Washu designed had driven the bill through the roof, especially with all those soaps that Mihoshi and Ryoko watched. The greatest scientific genius in the universe had forgotten to add a self contained power supply.

“As it is a full moon tonight I’m going to give it it’s very first a test run!”

Hearing that it was the very first test run set Tenchi back to shuddering nervously. Sure Washu could fix the house again, but when her experiments went wrong they hurt like nothing else. Wisely the people at the table said very little. Washu was scary when she was annoyed.

“That’s nice Washu-chan, could you like to join us for dinner first?”

“Sure, Sasami I think I will.”

Everyone was silently blessing Sasami for saving them form a potential disaster, at least for the time being. They all resumed their meal as Sasami set another place for Washu. Tenchi hoped that he could continue to have a peaceful night for a change, knowing that with the new invention it just wasn’t to be. A short while later the meal was finished, the dishes cleared away, this was Washu’s cue.

Bringing out the large device Washu set the device in the centre of the table, moonlight bathed it through the open door. It had a number of lights set beside a giant green button and another giant red button. Roughly shaped like a giant black box, it sort of resembled a weird looking power generator.

Rubbing her hands together in glee, and ignoring everyone else’s looks of trepidation Washu declared moonbeam energy harvester 2000 testing season open and pressed the giant green button. The machine hummed to life, a black nimbus appearing around it as it seemed to absorb the light. The lights next to the giant green button sprang to life, the first light winked on. After two minutes Washu began dancing around the room in joy, Mihoshi joined her – well dancing was fun.

“Yay, my latest creation worked! I am such a genius.”

“You are the greatest Washu!” Puppet one exclaimed dancing on Washu’s shoulder.

“Go Washu” Yelled the other puppet jumping up and down on Washu’s other shoulder.

The others present gave the machine a little longer before passing judgement. They had been burned many times before by Washu’s creations. Sasami and Ryo-Oki were the first to deem the invention safe. They were followed soon after by Ryoko and Ayeka. Kiyone and Tenchi stayed beside the machine however, not as trusting in Washu’s inventions as the others. Tenchi stayed because he had been burned way more frequently than anyone else, and Kiyone just stayed because she was suspicious – Washu was a wanted criminal after all.

Thus, it was Tenchi who first noticed the machine starting to whine and shudder, The green lights beside the two large buttons began to flash red. Tenchi and Kiyone both saw the smoke and sparks start to poor out of the machine. They both began to back away and shout the alarm when huge bolts of white light started to fly from the machine in random directions.

Katsuhito and Nobuyuki fled as soon as they heard Tenchi and Kiyone’s warnings. Ryoko noticed, grabbed Sasami and began flying to safety, white bolts bounced off her shield. Ayeka started to generate her logs and ran out of the house. Tenchi was about to grab Mihoshi and Washu and follow them when the machine exploded in a huge final white ball of energy taking the house with it. It then streaked away into the distance. In the end all that remained were a smoking crator and some rubble. Tenchi crouched over Mihoshi and Washu protectively as the light hawk wings slowly dissipated.

As Tenchi slowly rose he ushered Mihoshi and Washu to the lake so that they could join the others, he was just glad that no one got seriously hurt. Mihoshi was crying waterfalls that would have made Soun proud, while babbling about how brave Tenchi was and how glad he had saved her. Washu simply had her nose buried in her astral computer.

“Hmmm, it shouldn’t have done that…” she muttered, “it says here that the energy from the moon overloaded its capacity.”.

The entire Tenchi crew spun to face Washu when she screamed “Earths moon can generate that much energy!”. Muttering about building the next moonbeam energy harvester with much more capacity to handle the energy, she looked up to see everyone staring at her expectantly.

“Errrr, Oops.” Washu whispered sheepishly, everyone just sweat dropped.

**********

Ranma lay on the roof yet again cursing his fiancés, rivals/friends, and pops, silently in his head as he gazed at the full moon. Seppeku was sounding like a more and more attractive alternative to his messed up life. He had a few options: firstly, hang around the Tendo’s and marry Akane – he would eventually die of food poisoning though; Secondly, he could marry Ukyo – die of boredom as he was tied to a shop sharing Ukyo’s dreams but none of his own; or thirdly, marry Shampoo – be dragged back to china to be nothing more than a stud to her mare, and a slave. Despite what most people thought Ranma could think for himself, you had to think and plan in any fight you had anyway, right? These thoughts spiralled around Ranma’s head as he stared at the full moon in quiet contemplation.

That was when the moon began to plummet out of the sky, or so it seemed to Ranma. Now, he would normally react to such a threat instantly, what with rivals and fiancés constantly attacking/ throwing themselves at him. Why not now? He was frozen, the moonlight was soothing, he felt comfortable, you name the reason. Later Ranma would say that he was glad that he didn’t move out of the way.

A huge white globe of energy headed towards Ranma and instead of destroying him and the house beneath him seemed to flow into him. Ranma’s last feeling before he passed out was one of euphoria. The true full moon gazed down upon him. The spirit of a woman long dead smirked at what had just happened, yet another moon child had been born – yet due to his lineage he would be different. Her daughter was sure to see interesting time now that the wild horse had unwittingly joined the circus.

Authors notes:

Tenchi family tree can be found on the web at: it’s really thorough including all the Tenchi series and accurate as far as I can tell.

Please RR, I don’t know if I can write this fic well – but lets give it a go.
