In the 1700s this area was part of the Duncan
Plantation. The plantation home was somewhere
on Montague road. There was a chapel behind
the convenience store at the intersection of
Buncombe & Duncan Chapel. Also there is still
the cemetery there.
In 1930s Zeb Zelma Quine bought 250 acres of
this land. It wasn't until 1960s that a road
was built in this area.
Some points of interest are the Reedy River
and a train track which run parallel to the
Engel Community. The community came into
existence some 30+ years ago.
Reedy River at this point averages around two
feet wide. Of course, it never gets real
wide. Most people would consider this a creek.
I suppose the reason for calling this a
river is to get around environmental issues.
This river meanders south going through
downtown Greenville. The river here goes
through a swampy area for some distance.
The Swamp Rabbit ran over these rails. This
rail ran from Charleston to Ceasare's Head.
During the time Malaria was so bad on the
coast, passengers who boarded this train in
Charleston were not premitted to get off the
train until they reach Ceasara's Head. This
was because the local did not want this
diease to spread.
Anyone with some information on this can
email me, it would be appreciated.
The rail is now grown over. Some parts are
relatively uncluttered and make for good
hiking. This would be the section going
from Watkins Br to the south. Don't go
hiking here during the warm seasons
unless you have a lot of Off insect spray.
There is a lot of ticks. My daughter and I
learned the hard way. It is quiet walk except.
Any history of the people and area during those early years would be
appreciated.
