Knowledge of the
following five main areas will be needed for the examination.
(1) Objectivity – The Duties and
Responsibilities of the Arbiter
(2) Technical Knowledge – The JCF Constitution & Relevant
Bye-Laws (see index page for links)
(3) Technical Knowledge – FIDE Laws of Chess (2001)
& Regulations for Chess Competitions
(4) Technical Knowledge – Tournament Pairing Systems
and Tie Breaks
(5) Technical Knowledge – Time Controls (including
clock settings & adjustments)
Information relating to
each section will be available on this website or for download, and a sample
examination paper will shortly be made available for download.
Questions asked will
cover aspects of the five main areas of the syllabus.

Questions (50%)
The examination will be
90 minutes in length. Candidates will be supplied with all printed materials
necessary, including a copy of the latest FIDE Laws of Chess. The use of
calculators will be permitted, but not computers.
The Pass mark for the
examination will be 80%. Successful candidates will receive a Certificate from
the JCF.
The registration
form and examination fee of J$500
must be submitted to the Secretary of the Jamaica Chess Federation. The fee is
non-refundable. Prospective candidates must be fully paid up members of the
Jamaica Chess Federation.
The date of the next examination
will be announced as soon as possible. Candidates will be informed of the time
and place.
