Marceline Auselia Gresham

Timeline of her young life following the death of her father:

The following information is from scraps of paper found in the file of Richard H. Baugh, showing expenses paid out of her share of the estate by her half-brother, Sterling A. Gresham, during his guardianship until she was married (copies provided by Loretta Wright):

22 March 1853: Receipt for payment in full of $53.00 for her stay at Greensboro Female College, year ending Nov. 10, 1852.

3 Jan. 1854: "Received of Sterling A. Gresham, guardian of Marceline A. Gresham, thirty dollars payment in full for board of said minor during the year 1853. (signed) Catherine E. Gresham (her mother)."

April- Dec. 1854: Page from an account book showing purchases on account by 11/12-year-old Marceline.  Copy is largely unreadable but it shows that she bought, among many other items, 1 can of hooks and eyes, $.05, a bonnet, $1.25, bonnet ribbon, $.75, bonnet lining, $.25.

17 Jan. 1855: Account page showing charges to Marceline's account for purchases during 1854.  Among the items purchased were alpaca, letter paper, gloves, calico, hooks & eyes, thread, note paper, stick pins, ribbon, silk, boot laces, 1 black fan, 1 linen hanky, 1/2 yd of swiss muslin, 1 cedar pencil, 1 copy book, 1 Bailey's Grammar, gingham, 1 hair brush, 1 pr scissors, 1 pr shoes, and much more, for a total of $14.27 and 1/2 cents, paid in full.

28 May 1855: (printed form given by Greensboro Female College for billing) "For tuition of Miss M. Gresham." $22.50 was paid to the College Division and $2.50 for contingent expenses, for a total of $25.00 received from Sterling A. Gresham, guardian.

18 Feb. 1856: "Received of Sterling A. Gresham guardian of Marceline A. Gresham Seventy-five dollars payment in full for board of said minor during the year 1856. (signed) Catherine E. Gresham"

28 Feb. 1856: Receipt for payment in full of $7.65 & 3/4 cents for items bought on account from Feb. 2 through Dec. 10, 1855, including buttons, silk, more bonnet ribbon, and a cash loan of $1.50.

28 June through 19 Oct. 1856: Account record for $14. 26 for purchase of various items, including ribbon, $.25, silk, $1.22, 5 yds of calico, $.63, box of hook and eyes, $.12, and a looking glass, $.65.

19 Dec. 1856: $10.73 received from Sterling A. Gresham, paid to Smith & Hall for her purchases during the year, including thread, alpaca, and calico.

7 Jan. 1859: "Received of Sterling A. Gresham, guardian of Marceline A. Gresham, now Marceline Baugh, the following negroes, Merita & child at $800 Dorah $700 Sarah (unk) $250 Ezekiel $1,000 Columbus $1,000 Harriet $1,000 as her portion of the negro property and one brown mule valued at $80 amounting to $4,832.  Also six hundred dollars as her proportional share of the lands according to the will of S.H.R. Gresham decd.  Also her portion of stock, crops, farming utensils.  (signed) Richard H. Baugh In right of my wife Marceline A. Baugh."

24 Nov. 1859:
Marceline, now about age 17, received $208.14 in full satisfaction of her remaining claim on the estate of her father, releasing Sterling A. Gresham from any further responsibility.  Recorded in the Greene County courthouse by the ordinary, Eugenius L. King, and signed by Richard H. Baugh.
