HENRY CLINTON ATKINSON
Henry Clinton Atkinson, 71, well known Madison businessman, died March 9 at Athens General Hospital. A native of Morgan County, he was a member of a well known family that has been active in the community for generations.
He was born July 12, 1914, the son of the late M. Paul and Sallie Jenkins Atkinson. He was reared in the Brownwood Community and educated in the Brownwood and Rutledge schools. While still a high school student, he began his career as an automotive mechanic by working after school at a garage in Rutledge.
He worked for many years as Ford mechanic and Service Manager for surrounding dealerships. In 1958 Mr. Atkinson opened Morgan County Motors and added farming equipment and automobile sales and service along with a service station. His company was one of the leading sales companies in the southeast For Case Farm Equipment and American Motors as long as he was in business.
Because of declining health, he closed his business in 1975 and worked for Mason Farms where he could combine his love of farming and his mechanical ability. He retired in 1981 after suffering several heart attacks and returned to his hobbies of gardening, cooking and genealogy.
He was also an avid sports fan, square dancer and a devoted family man.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Little of Greensboro, a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Cross, a granddaughter, Mrs. Keith Jones and one great-grandson, Ricky Jones, all of Madison. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. A. F. Spears, Madison, and Mrs. B. H. Mobley, Decatur.
Funeral services were held at Brownwood Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 11, at two p.m. The Reverend W. T. Booth and the Reverend Clyde Carter officiated. Burial was in Brownwood Church Cemetery.
Simmons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
