| The; kumpania is a term that encompasses the Rom family and its campground.; The kupmania is where the Rom socialize, spread news, trade atories and recite oral traditions and history. Often depicted as a campfire, surrounded by the colourful vardos. Depending on what time of day or night food may be being prepared over the open fire by the many women of the clan. The Makarevich kumpania is located out back of the tavern where many clans may gather to keep the Makarevich Rom up to date on local and far spread problems, achievments and warning of where to go and where not to go when the travelling season begins yet again.; Gadje are not welcome here unless invited. To break this unspoken taboo, at best will get you ignored, at worst....you will be forecefully moved. Should you gain invitation to the private area of the Rom, be wary of where you seat yourself. THe long logs sitting parallel each other are there for a reason. Seating is based on sex, women on one side and men on the other. Both sides of the fire are to remain open so bad spirits may travel through freely and not be caught within the campfire or those flanking it. There will often be music and dancing....one does not touch one of the oposite sex unles you are married to the other...if you are not, again, you will be "asked" to leave, loose the offending appendage or at best be considered unclean. our ways are strange to you but they are OUR ways, if you can not abide them, stay within the tavern. |
