:::RVM SOURCE::: This is a complete archive matt ferrie’s “TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF” RVM show reviews as found on the RVM forums. Enjoy, they are some of the best RVM show critiques you will find. TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 12-13-03 warehouse show in La Crosse, WI what's up everyone? this will most likely be my final review of rearview mirror. No the band isn't breaking up, changing their name, moving away, or any other circumstance involving the band. I am moving to Charlotte, North Carolina at the end of this month...aww yea don't cheer too much. ANYWAY enough about myself and on with the review of the show. Openers...were Ruin. Musically as far as song composition and all for a three piece they did a nice job; although, they need to spend another few weeks polishing off those songs because they noticeably messed up a few of them. Sped up and slowed down parts and not on purpose and their bassist often played too fast or too slow with the guitarist. Their bassist also left me wondering if he knew that he had more than one string on the bass and that the down stroke is not the only technique you can use. There is potential with that band...so check them out in a year or so. Ok on with the band we really want to hear about, RVM. They began on a nice note of "for a time", a crowd favorite. I am quite unsure about the set list since it wasn't on a piece of paper..it was written on Adam's arm. Now the previous two times seeing RVM I was undecided on how much I liked their live tone. Now I know that it was merely the shitty sound systems of the places I had gone to. The Warehouse doesn't have the greatest sound system in the world but shit it made a lasting impression on my opinion of the current live rvm sound. I really like the new tone now and the small punch distortion I wanted..was about 75% there in the live show. The best part of the whole show was "See Me Waiting" first they extended it for an extra minute or so then they broke straight into "Maud" from the elongated ending. Matt's solos were just awesome on this night and Jason's bass lines seemed to stick out much more than usual. This made for a much more enjoyable show. The energy that was once with RVM's live extraordinaire is not gone people. Adam seems quite unwilling to let his live show go to shit. His playing and singing was very impressive on this night. Though he was flat on "No War" it was aight. It was a great way to end my experiences with Rearview Mirror and the warehouse. I was; however, extremely disappointed at the end of the show. No one decided to help along the ONE MORE SONG chant(except frogstomp) and...the lights came on and the people left...and for the first time ever seeing Rearview Mirror....there was no encore. Kinda made for a sad going away kind of thing considering Adam had "My Advice"(one of my all time fav. rvm songs) written on his arm as an encore. I was quite bummed about this and did not make it any easier to leave the place. Anyway enough bitching about what didn't happen and some praise for one great RVM show. It was by far the best I've seen since the change of sound for the band. Well..my time has come...and I will visit regularly but I highly doubt I will see RVM again, but hey, anything is possible. So thanks for reading and I hope I didn't bore you half to fucking death and salutations buy some Hatebreed and check out the band Christiansen(because they rock). Rock on people. --iowa TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 11-9-03 Jewels skating rink in Decorah, IA mmkay here we are. RVM once again. AS was last time the crowd was small. Sad but it seemed to be alright for a Sunday night show. Opening band, Fall, did their thing as usual when RVM plays in Decorah. Lots of instrumental from that band with repetition made for kind of a boring show. Since the instrumental wasn't that great anyway. The show started...with the usual: The Scenery. A great way to break into an album and a show. The space they played on was set up so the band really couldn't move around a whole hell of a lot so they were limited in that sense, which was odd considering the place was huge. Sound wasn't too bad...Jason's bass sounded like SHIT! There was a lot of mid's and a little too much of the highs and that made for some unnecessary clicks and shit..it wasn't cool. being a bassist myself...that was uncool. Matt seemed to get a better tone from his Fender Telecoustic than his Fender Strat. But neither of them even come close to the tone that his Gibson had.. Fenders=bad tone. Anyway..Adam's guitar sounded better than normal to me. Second song was Hopeless(brown.clown turned rvm song) a great mellow track that builds very nicely. next up was un-recorded track For.A.Time which is a great song....one of the "older" new songs. See Me Waiting(one of my personal favs) was up next with it's great slow paced bluesy type feel song. Last Song was up next to bring the tempo back on the up swing which continued with my personal favorite on the new cd, Miss Mary. Miss Mary really is a great song..it builds very well with great break downs and all. Great song live. Things slowed back down with the soothing song, C.O.G. after that they went for something a little older with City Walls. Then into a newer fan favorite, No War. After No War they busted out a few newer songs that have not been recorded such as : Charles, Watching, Trumps(one I've never heard), Maud(yeah this one is on the cd), and 24th something i cannot read the handwriting on this set list. for an encore they played the ever so popular Spectacular Moon, and a song called State. all in all a GREAT show for RVM until the warehouse...salutations...check out the band Mastadon and BUY CHIMAIRA! ---peace kids, Iowa TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 9-5-03 Bubba’s in Schley, IA Wow...I'm back. Never thought this would be happening that's for sure. But the path of RVM has once again crossed my way. Sooooo where to begin. Three bands on the bill on this night: Undermine, Ginger Pop and yours truly, RVM. Started off with Undermine...they played mostly all cover songs except 3 originals. the original songs they played were AMAZING....VERY good stuff from the boys in Undermine(way to be Turd, Sim, Byrnes, Shay, and Izzy) There was only one issue with undermine....sadly....their singer...is well down right horrid, and you must think, “well he can't be THAT bad”, sorry but he is. He has cool stage presence though. Next up was Ginger Pop....and they were an 80's rock cover band. Talented musicians, but I'm not much of an 80's person so the music was not too good. and it really didn't fit the style of the night AT ALL. Well next up we had RVM. Adam donning his new facial hair, very short hair, and his old army hat. Matt shaved most of his lumber jack style beard also. They started out with The Scenery which is on their new(and supposedly self titled) cd which they had for sale. I have gotten the pleasure of listening to it all the way through and it is REALLY good. Anyway they sure pulled a TON of surprises on us. They played songs off of all three of their cd's. I could not believe my ears when I heard them break into songs like: Stain, Hold Your Eyes, Other and Beautiful Like You from Blown Out. it was really cool to hear all those songs again. They played 28/7, All Lights Off, Thank you, Like they Were, and Blade from All Lights Off. Adam played a lot of rhythm guitar for the songs off of the new cd....this brought a whole new level to the band. It was amazing. The energy is definately still there. It was amazing. Sadly Matt did not have his Les Paul and had to settle for a Fender Strat, which I honestly think...KILLED his tone. He had to keep tuning constantly because it wouldn't hold. The only song they didn't play that I REALLY wanted them to was Study me....i love that song. and for the Andy haters...his lines on the new stuff DON'T SUCK.... they are KICK ASS! And that is no lie....Andy is an AMAZING drummer. The music was GREAT the food was terrible but the accommodations were good and the crowd sucked. RVM is back people....time to get back into the swing of things. Well everybody that's about it...sorry it's a short and kind of shitty review but it's been a while since I've done this so bear with me till I see them another 18 times. for now...rock on...stay weird...get fucked... and go buy the new Mars Volta cd. ---Iowa TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 2-15-03 the infamous “Last Show” at the Warehouse in La Crosse, WI Well what can I say? It's been fun. I really like writing these reviews...though many of you probably think they suck or are very annoying...I don't mind. This will be my last review for the band known as Rearview Mirror. I guarantee they will leave a lasting impression on us for a very long time. Well lets cut to the chase as I can tell you're bored already. RVM definitely pulled out ALL the stops with this show. Starting off with the oldie "Fame" off Blown out and electrifying the end of it which was just amazing to see. Then they kicked off a ton of old old songs such as Hold Your Eyes, Other, Stain, and the ever popular: Beautiful Like You. Then playing parts of songs off of All Lights Off then going back and forth between them. That was really neat the way they did Like they Were and Guilty (mixed them into one song)...f*ckin great in my opinion. Andy was just poundin’ the drums and was full of creative shit putting in all kinds of killer fills in all the time...very very cool. Matt sported a beard of sorts. It looked kinda odd but it's Matt so it looked cool. All the guys seemed very "with it" on this night. Very friendly, outgoing and FULL of energy....like MAD, it was GREAT!. They even busted out a few new songs like Spectacular Moon and one or two others that i cannot recall the titles to. The crowd was kinda shitty though. They were all just standin’ there not involved...not a usual RVM crowd. I was kinda pissed off, because it made me look pretty retarded being one of the few that were goin nuts for the songs. The show was extremely long (one of their longest) which was a very good thing and it was easily their best. Well I must retire...it was fun see you all some other time...some other place. Peace ---Iowa TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 12-14-02 Warehouse in La Crosse, WI HELL YEAH.....HELL YEAH. Well we weren't so lucky with openers tonight. Not much to say but i didn't stick around for them. i came back when RVM came on and did the last thing i ever thought they would do. went acoustic. WOW, it was crazy shit Matt up there with the acoustic guitar, Andy playing(breaking more or less) with brushes, and Jason just played usual with the bass turned down a tad. Adam put out the usual KILLER performance. the thing that stood out the most is you could hear the total perfection of the music. nothing to cover a mistake or to drown out a cool add on. It was awesome......just awesome. Can't wait for more. sorry my review isn't very long but describing the acoustic isn't possible unless you were there, but until then...wow it rocked. Matt TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 12-13-02 at the ol’ Warehouse in LAX That was amazing. The most unique thing happened last night...THREE good bands played...THREE!!!! Camel Junkies were a very good opener with their more hardcore punk style..i was fairly impressed even though one of their guitarists looked like a fucking squirrel on crack. But the band that stole the show was Blank Theory.....WOW...WOW!!!!!! They rocked the house with some AMAZING songs. They were really nice guys too i talked to them. RVM had a tough act to follow but they did a DAMN good job of it. Starting the show off with "Thank You" and "Sinking" from then on there was no stopping the energy...they were all over and AMAZING like always. RVM never disappoints. The one thing that amazed me the most was ANDY. Lots were raggin’ on him before because he was not that great of a drummer, but i believe they have been practicing HARDCORE because that man was playing beats like there was no tomorrow, and they were DAMN good I was very impressed how much he had advanced in his style....very reminiscent of TJ if you ask me. They ended up playing a bunch of new songs including "On and On", "My Advice", "For a Time", "COG", and one other one i can't remember. This all so great night ended off with a killer encore of none other than "Animal". And WOW what a way to end the night it was....just killer...just Fucking killer. ----Mateo TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 10-12-02 Warehouse in La Crosse, WI Ok the night started with a familiar band REDOVERLUNAR which i didn't have a whole lot to say about last night, but for some odd reason tonight...they were VERY appealing. I REALLY liked them tonight and they played pretty much the same set. I think i was a bit critical of them so i went easy on 'em tonight cause they worked hard to be where they are. REDOVERLUNAR KICKS ASS!!!(seriously go check them out). anyway...RVM.....the night started with in the beginning and accelerated from then on....HOLY SHIT it was CRAZY i mean if you were there Friday and didn't make Saturday's show.........damn here's a moment of silence to you cause you missed out on some killer songs and a GREAT performance. WOOOHOOO oh my....they WERE INTO IT like NO other the guys were flying off the walls.....they were happy and you could tell. You can tell by a bands performance if they are in the mood or not .....and tonight ALL of them were. they played the AWESOME new cut My Advice again along with not one..BUT TWO new songs titled....Watching... and For A Time. SOME KILLER material and i cannot wait for more. I hope that they play those songs in the future, but I'm sure they will sample out new tracks every now and then because Adam told me they were just trying those songs out....he said it's fun to jam out a new tune every once in a while. I will not argue with hat cause those songs KICK ASS. But anyway.....it was great and heartfelt pity for all you who didn't make it cause it was the best of the 14 shows I've seen and that's no lie. till next time this is rvmrules saying...GOOD NIGHT!! --Iowa TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 10-11-02 (ware-else??) Warehouse in La Crosse, WI Well well well here I am again faithful readers......umm never mind. I'll start with the band OVERyou.....they were a solid band that set the mood for one GREAT NIGHT of music. They played a solid set of songs and were a fairly talented band I would most likely go to see them again. REDOVERLUNAR was less than what was told......i was expecting more, but once again...another fairly solid set. MUCH better than the last Warehouse openers, Abrasive and Subnoxious (not bad bands...just not the kind of music we need before RVM) anyway lets cut to the chase....RVM came out...with a more unusual look to them. Matt donned a new RVM shirt instead of his green flag football shirt that is very popular among fans. Adam came out with an army helmet that he bought in New York which did not stay on his head very long. They mixed up their set a bit also playing "Stronger Before" first and i believe "in the beginning" second...after that i was too busy screaming the words to remember what songs they were. One thing that stuck out the most in their performance was that they made intro's for all of their songs that sounded AMAZING so it was a great night. The guys seemed MORE energetic than normal and that's VERY hard to do...it was nothing short of the greatest thing i have seen to this date, but what really made my night was......ANDY!!!!!!! hell yes that man is the coolest guy on earth....he's soooo happy to be there and is such an amazing drummer.... I miss TJ, but Andy is good enough for me......he is much more fun to watch than ANY drummer I've ever seen...he's an all out kinda guy. The moment of truth finally arrived when RVM came on for their encore .........it was a song called "My Advice" and it was the first new material I've heard for a very long time.......and let me say that song is just a SAMPLE of what RVM has to come. I talked to the guys after the show and they told me that, even though "my Advice" was a great song, that the songs they are playing tomorrow....are 10 times better. So i CAN'T WAIT for Saturday's show...believe me I'll write another review for it...until tomorrow night..... --matt TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 9-14-02 Ocktober-fest grounds in La Crosse, WI (matt doesn't mention it, but I am almost positive that this was Andy Blessing's 1st show as drummer) WELL WELL WELL, I'm back, by popular demand for another show review. RVM was preceded by Big Daddy Cane, Whack Daddy, and Hellzee. I have to say the best of the openers was Big Daddy Cane, they played out stuff like Jimi Hendrix and other old school stuff, it was amazing. Whack Daddy was a little odd, but very good at what they played. the only "problem" was that they played a song that was really heavy like something by Godsmack and then play Jimmy Eat World or something. Hellzee was overall pretty good band. RVM of course STOLE the show with their energizing set. They played the songs of the album in order except they threw Study Me in there somewhere. The crowd was insane the whole show. the guys sounded better than ever with even more energy than some of the shows in the past. Adam with his usual pulsing voice and lyrical sweetness, Jason always head banging and giving the crowd a show, but of course Matt was rippin’ it up with his oh so sweet riffs and chords. The drums tonight were overly exceptional also. (ed's note: *cough* andy *cough*) For an encore they played a song I was familiar and had heard before, but forgot who sings it, they also played another unreleased goody...Mask...which I see they have re-done since the last time I heard it. The show was nothing short of spectacular and was a night i will definitely remember. well later all --Matt TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 7-25-02 RAGBRAI Festival in Oelwein, IA (that show were the cops showed up to "control" the moshers) Well, well here i am again seeing my favorite band, and lets just say this one was all too reminiscent of the days of RVM in bars. Well I arrived right as the "Guitar Guy" was finishing his last couple songs. he did a good job covering CCR and some other classic bands, all in all a good band, but not before seeing RVM. RVM came on and blasted their usual starter All Lights Off with Adam donning his freshly cut hair which is now about cheek length, and the rest of the guys doing their usual explosive performance. Next up i believe was Stronger Before which is always a treat to hear live. Of course a show wouldn't be a show without In the Beginning which set the crowd off and then busting down the puny fence between us and the stage. Right after that song security came and stopped the show to bitch at us and we responded by yelling and throwing things at him. After that calmed down things went back to usual and they kicked out more great songs like Sinking, Study Me, the new elongated intro version of Blade, Dead Air, Animal, Guilty, Like They Were, Thank You, and of course 28/7. During all this was the moshing, crowd surfing, and the security spraying mace at everyone no matter what they were doing. people that were a little away from the crowd even got hit with mace. People were getting arrested left and right. My friend Justin who is only 13 almost got taken away for no reason until some people pulled him back. But to make this already memorable show even better, RVM kicked out a classic tune that they used to cover at every show back in the day, they played Tool's Sober which is just a totally kick ass song. All in all a good night besides the small rioting, but another GREAT performance by Rearview Mirror. ---Matt TOTAL DESCRIPTION OF: 6-22-02 Club Shagnasty’s in Cedar Falls, IA All right here we go the night started out waiting in line for tickets, it was pretty boring till TJ came outside and talked to my friend Justin and i for a while ( he gave Justin drum lessons and we know the whole band pretty well). So we got in and found a table to sit at for a while and here comes Trevor, so we sat and talked with him for a while. then the opening band, Black Eye started playing. To tell you the truth i was not expecting much considering the last time i saw a band open up for RVM they were hardcore death metal and they sucked, but the case was different with Black Eye. They were still a very heavy band but they had a bunch of talent so you had to like them. They did a killer Machine Head (the band not the song by Bush) cover also. Though there singer looked so out of place it wasn't even funny they were still good. On with the show RVM comes out and kicks off their usual opener of "All Lights Off" which is such a killer song. Next up was Stronger Before which is one of my fav new songs. After that they played the ever so popular In The beginning and did they play it good, i guarantee you have NEVER heard this song until you hear it live ,oh my god. Even though I've seen them play a ton of times they are always better the next time I see them. I'm not sure on the order of the next songs but they finally started playing "Sinking" live which is an extremely good song. They played two unreleased tracks "Study Me" which I believe should have been on the album, and "Mask" which is an older, but very good song. They ended off their regular set with they oh so explosive 28/7(which may not sound like much on the album, but you haven't heard RVM till you see them live. For an encore they played "Mask" and the kicked off a track that is so good and so hard to sing I believe only Adam could do it. They played a cover of the Deftones "Bored" being the Deftones are my favorite band this was a real treat hearing my cousins kick out suck a kick ass track. that ended the night for me considering they made all the people that were underage leave after the show ended. I can't wait to see them again. Peace Out --Matt(rvmrules)Ferrie
