I was first introduced to the band Rearview Mirror, or better known as "RVM," in late summer 2002 at Rock 103.3's annual "Lazerfest" concert. What first caught my attention was that this semi-well-known band consisted of fellow Iowans who hailed from Cresco. Rearview Mirror had entered the pop mainstream earlier that year with the song "In the Beginning." Its record deal with Steve Lillywhite, who helped produce bands including U2, the Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band, brought them closer to fame. After a falling out with the well-established producer, many were skeptical of RVM's future. However, the band has proved all of the skeptics wrong with its newest self-titled album. Its spirited, cut-to-the-point rock style noted from "In The Beginning" is still evident in its newest CD. What struck me as the best feature of the newest album was definitely the meaningful lyrics, especially in "No War" and "Hopeless;" the band seems to have matured a lot since "In The Beginning." The instrumentals, however, are not meant to be outdone. Songs like "See Me Waiting" and "Spectacular Moon" are examples of their great musicianship. In October, North Iowans had the chance to see RVM at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, performing songs from both their new and old albums. Perhaps one of the reasons I give this band such positive feedback is because of the invigorating performances that I have been fortunate enough to see twice. But, until they come back here again, you can always just purchase their CD, which I assure will not disappoint you.
