:::::RVM SOURCE::::: Q & A with guitarist Matt.Olson 1-11-04 Q: What are the band's plans for 2004? A: We are working on new music constantly and have a bunch of new material already completed. We are hoping to find better ways to record all along the way and keep playing shows and putting new music out there as much as we can. We are just as anxious for other people to hear it as they are themselves. Q: What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of being self-managed now? A:It's been good for us, it definitely does not mean we are going to be self managed forever but it has been really helpful to be able to make all decisions on our own and get some perspective on things after all that happened around and after the making of all.lights.off. We are coming from a different head space now. Q: For the most part, if the band were given big production dollars by a label to record a CD again, would it be recorded the retro sort of way "rearview mirror" was? why/why not? A:Our goal in recording is to translate the live human energy of music to tape. We would love the opportunity to explore and experiment with all sorts of things. We are proud of the self-titled release but would like to not be hindered by the limitations we had in putting that together. If we could get everyone to hear our music how we hear it that would be great. That has yet to happen. Q: Live, your tone has changed. What inspried you to put down the Gibson les paul and start using the Fender strat? A:After being on tour and making all.lights.off, we really started to get a better idea of what we wanted to do in a live situation. The songs and structures our the most important to us and we want the melody and the groove to translate first and foremost. As far as the choice of guitars, I originally sold my les pauls and half stack to pay rent. I always feel that a variety of guitar and gear keeps you looking at music with fresh ears and helps you not get caught up in habits. Maybe this time next year I'll be playing a les paul again, but the sounds will be totally different. I'm not interested in staying in the same place to long. Tonally our things get tired. Q: What is the band's opinion of the music of Fatt Kamp? A:I can't speak for the band, but I do think people should make whatever kind of music that makes them feel something. If what those guys write makes them happy and inspired then I think that's great.
