the 'Delta link' rear axle, with semi trailing arms, but each linked to the other and  to the chassis through directional bushings.

The body

In a technical way of speaking the Galaxy 2 project leans on 5 pillars:
The new N-engine 5 cilinder inline, The Delta link rear suspension, the SIPS construction, ARH and the short M56 gearbox. Developing the body was not as easy as it seemed. Jan Wilsgaard designed the P1, rather dull, just like the P2 designed by Rolf Malmgren. The P3, another design, looks too much like a Volvo 740, while the new model needs more dynamic design!
The first 1:1 scaled prototype, the M020 was not what you can call a beauty. More designfeatures like the so called B3 and C3 from Jan Wilsgaard get the approval of the board. These hatchbacks types have a lot of windows which give them more dynamic statement, but less Volvo statement.
In january 1985 the less progressive A1SN, also a hatchback from Jan Wilsgaard gets the first 'go' from the board. Together with the A2S a 4 doors saloon version. The design looks rather boxy, but at the same time more dynamic. But as we all know, the final prototype was drawn by Rolf Malmgren. It is the dynamic, stylisch VOLVO P10, better known as the VOLVO 850. After a long way and many prototypes the most innovative Volvo ever.

the P2, from Rolf  Malmgrens, too small, too simple!
