Springerle she made at Christmastime,

pastries for the Fastnacht.

Mornings she pinned her hair

strictly from her face,

put on the kettle, laid out the cheese.

Noondays she scrubbed the hands,

setting out sausages and schwartzbrot.

At eveningtime she spread the cloth

and served him meat and beer.

Sundays she rose early

and went to church to pray.

Such sitting was allowed one day in seven.
