The Rock of Gibraltar, has always been governed by two important factors, its physical shape and its geographical location.
Standing at the world’s strategic cross-roads.
Its history dates back to about 950 BC.
It was believed to be one of the “Pillars of Hercules.
It has a commanding position over the Straits of Gibraltar, it is about 25 km. across the water, to the North African coast.
The Rock’s territory covers an area of about 6½ km2 . It is about 4½ km long,
1½ km wide at its widest. Rising to 423 meters at its highest point.
The east face is a sheer drop into the sea. While the west face less steep, has been augmented by fill at the waters edge, and forms the site of the town.
It is the last outpost of the former British Empire, it is a self governing colony.
The language, as well as the currency, are both British.
The best know attractions are the ‘Barbary Apes’.
The apes, in reality tailless monkeys, are the protege of the Gibraltar Regiment.
They roam around freely, on the upper parts of the Rock
