Mishloah Manot Packages to Sororities
This Purim, I made gift baskets for each of the sorority chapters for Purim.  In them, I included 20-30 Hamantaschan (ordered from the kosher bakery at Acme), mini Kedem grape juices, mini boxes of raisins and sucking candies.  Additionally, I rolled up a short description of the holiday, a recipe for hamantaschan and a Hillel calendar for the month of March.  Then, I wrapped each basket with cellophane and tied it together with ribbons of each chapter's colors, attaching a letter to each sorority.  The baskets were hand delivered on Purim day.  I would highly recommend doing this again because it was quick, easy and greatly appreciated by the sororities.

Letter to sorororities:
"They were to observe them as days of feasting and merrymaking, and as an occasion for sending a package of gifts from one friend to another, and gifts to poor people."  (Esther 9:20-23)  This quote comes from the Megillah, the scroll of the Book of Esther, which is read on the Jewish holiday of Purim.  It describes the Purim ritual of "sending gifts" or mishloah manot.  Rutgers Hillel wants to recognize the women of Sigma Delta Tau with this gift basket of goodies and we wish you all a very festive Purim.

Hamantashan Dough Recipe

1 cup sugar
1 1/3 cups shortening (this is usually Parve)
2 eggs
6 Tablespoons water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups sifted flour  (you may need to add some more)

Cream together sugar and shortening.
Add eggs, and mix well
Add water and vanilla
Add flour, mixing until the dough forms a ball

Wrap well and refrigerate, preferably overnight.

Roll thin to cut.  If you do not have a biscuit cutter, a water glass dipped in flour works well, too.

Add filling, pinch into triangle to form hamantashan.  Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 until lightly browned, about 15 minutes.

Filling: 

Fruit pie fillings work well, same for poppyseed, which can be found in the baking section at the grocery store.  You can also use chocolate chips or nuts.  Plus you can use ALMOST any fruit preserves, provided that there's not too much sugar added.
