| Greek: Jewish Fraternity Sorority Council |
||||||||||||||
| The Greek Community has become very active in Jewish life this year through the creation of the Jewish Fraternity Sorority Council. There are so many Jewish students in the fraternities and sororities who have never been connected to Jewish life on campus. The JFSC was formed with four students in the Greek system to create programs connecting these Jewish students in the fraternities and sororities to each other and to Jewish life. We organized two Greek Shabbats (one per semester) before the establishment of the JFSC. Once they became an official group, they held two programs, a Post Passover Bagel Party and an end of the year BBQ. Each of these programs ranged in attendance from 25-40 students. | ||||||||||||||

| Rutgers University has three traditional Jewish fraternities and one Jewish sorority. The fraternities are AEPi, ZBT and Sammy (which was just reinstated this past year). The Jewish sorority is SDT, although they do not recognize themselves as Jewish. Delta Gamma and Phi Delta Theta have many Jewish members. The Jewish Fraternity Sorority Council has worked hard to establish a strong EXECUTIVE BOARD. The executive board has four founding members. Their positions are: President: Michelle Mandell, Delta Gamma, [email protected] Public Relations VP: Jason Cohen, Alpha Epsilon Pi, [email protected] Financial VP: Julie Nadler, Alpha Omicron Pi, [email protected] Secretarial VP: Courtney Katz, Delta Gamma, [email protected] The REPRESENTATIVES from each chapter on the board include: ZTA: Jen Buskirk, [email protected] Phi Delta Theta: Evan Guerin, [email protected] ZBT: Joel Davidson, [email protected] SDT: Lauren Cohen (Jason Cohen has her contact info) Another person who should stay involved is Melissa Rosen of Alpha Chi Omega because she is also the Panhell Treasurer. Michelle, Julie, Jason and Courtney have been extremely dedicated to making this program a success. The executive board meets about every other week to plan the programs. Next year they will need to work out another schedule to work in meetings with the representatives from the chapters. At the start of the year, a retreat of some sort should be held with all of the board members and representatives to establish a calendar of events for the semester and to brainstorm representatives from the chapters that do not have yet. This year, I met with Amy Vojta, the Assistant Dean of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, and discussed our creation of the Jewish Fraternity Sorority Council. Dean Joann Arnholt was on maternity leave for the majority of the year so I never met with her but she knows about the existence of the JFSC as well. They are very excited that we are committing ourselves to the Greek community. I would encourage you to meet with Joann at the start of the semester to introduce yourself and share your plans for the JFSC for next year. In early June, Jason Shao, the IFC President came to meet with the staff. He and I spoke at legnth about cosponsorship and how the JFSC could work together with the IFC and Panhell in the upcoming year. He is looking forward to hearing from you in August. You should also contact the Panhel President, Abbie Ongjoco. |
