Freshmen
As I mentioned, after the first FYSH program, FYSH eating Phish Food, I did not do much follow up with any freshmen.  However, it is usually the freshmen who look for smaller, safe places when they first come to campus, and Hillel should be that place for many of them.  Therefore, i would still encourage the JCSC to get to know the freshmen and make them feel welcome..  Here is the evaluation of that program...

Program title:  FYSH Eating Phish Food

Program Summary:  A fun event and planning meeting for First Year Students at Hillel

Program Description:  Fysh eating PHISH Food was a meeting for freshmen on campus to come get to know one another and plan events.  We served Ben and Jerrys Phish food ice cream and every other flavor I could find in the store!!  The students came together to plan events for freshmen and for Hillel at large.

Date:  originally scheduled for Sept. 13 but rescheduled to October 11, 2001  7PM

Goals of Program:  Start a first year students group at Hillel, assign co-chairs for programs planned by FYSH and form a connection between the Jewish first year students.

Meet Goals?  Why or Why not?  Yes and No.  Not as many students came as I had anticipated and the students who did come were already very involved.  However, it was successful because the students were very interested in getting involved and planning fun and creative events.

Type of Program:  Social, Informational and planning

Program planned for:  freshmen

Why planned:  To engage freshmen students, form a Jewish freshmen community to plan future events together

Receive grants:  No

How far ahead start planning:  4 weeks.  The event has to be planned far enough in advance to get it on the calendar and to publicize in the residence halls.  However, the actual planning does not take a lot of time.

People who help plan:  2; JCSC Fellow and HLC Welcome Chair

People who help implement:  2

Expected Attendance:  40-50

Actual Attendance:  20

Budget:  $40 for ice cream

Step by Step Process:
Meet with the HLC welcome chair to set a date and time for the event.  Reserve a lounge or area in a student center (try not to have it at Hillel again!).  Buy Ben and Jerrys ice cream and set it up on a table with spoons, bowls and scoopers.  As students arrive introduce yourself and the HLC welcome chair, encourage them to take some ice cream and then find a seat in the circle.  Once everyone is seated start off with an ice breaker so that everyone can get to know each other.  There will hopefully be a large attendance so keep it short.  Explain what FYSH is, events that happened in the past and start brainstorming great events that they would like to plan for the upcoming year for just freshmen and for the greater Jewish group.  Make sure to get everyones names and contact information and follow up the meeting with an e-mail or phone calls to start planning the amazing ideas!!

Forms of publicity:  word of mouth, e-mail, calendar, flyers on the fence of Hillel, flyers around campus, Whats Happening in the Targum

Location of event:  Hillel

Suggestions for someone else:  Have this program set up close to the beginning of the school year so that you can publicize it at the opening BBQ and at the fairs.  Keep it outside of Hillel.  The event seemed to attract a group of students who were already very involved in Hillel and who didnt need so much engaging so try to publicize and personally invite students who are not Hillel regulars.  Make sure you have an agenda and ideas before the meeting and stick to them.  The freshmen tended to get distracted.

Impact of Program.  Students Enriched?  The students who came were very excited about planning programs and had tons of fantastic ideas!!
