What to do those first few weeks ???
You arrive at work your first day, all ready to throw yourself into things, but wait...where do you start???  There are no students yet to "engage" so it seems like there might not be a lot to do, but oh, there is!!  Here are some things to keep you busy...
**Take tours of the campuses! This should be done in the first few weeks, because if it's not, it just won't get done.  Become familiar with where the table locations are in each student center and know the dining facilities.  Take a couple of days to do these tours because they will be most helpful in the long run!  Also, ride the buses a few times to figure them out.  You may need to take them throughout the year.
**Become familiar with all of the programs on the computer. Learn how to make a banner on Publisher, how to make flyers, how to make brochures through Microsoft Works.  You will be using these programs a LOT throughout the year.  Once the students arrive on campus, you'll need to start publicizing ASAP so be familiar with them BEFORE.
**Join the gym! Even if you never use the membership, it is good to have it.  It's free so there's nothing lost.  You will need to take a FitCheck test before joining which is a physical exam which takes about ten minutes.  Call the gym to set that up.
**Meet the important people! Meet the women at the Central Reservations offices.  Introduce yourself to the head of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Joann Arnholt.  She will be an excellent resource for the Greek community.  Introduce yourself to the Deans of Residence Life, as well.
**Work out a calendar! Rutgers College and Busch campuses have a ten-day policy for reserving tables and rooms.  Try to establish a calendar of tabling and programming for yourself in August so that you can reserve table space and rooms (if you need them for September.  Be sure to take into account tabling and programs for the High Holidays.)
**Check out the Program Exchange! On Hillel's website, at www.hillel.org, there is a section called the Program Exchange.  This is a list of successful programs done on all Hillel campuses, which can be sorted by target groups, campus type, holidays, program type, etc.  It is a great place to get ideas for your own programs.
