Then what�s empowerment, you may ask? Empowerment is allowing those students who find Jewish life on their own initiative or who have been �engaged� to take on leadership roles. The Hillel Leadership Council, HLC, are the most �empowered� students in Hillel. But it goes much further than that. Empowerment is not only taking on leadership roles, but being an active member of Jewish life. It means that the Jewish role that particular student plays affects the life of the students around them. But, aside from the typical �empowered� students who devote countless hours to Hillel, there are many other empowered students, for example, the executive council of the JFSC, the Ross Fellows, the Birthright Fellow, etc. These are engagement students who have become empowered �where they�re at.�
As you can see, there is definitely an overlap between engagement and empowerment. It is important to remember that even the empowered students need to be engaged and that the engaged students should always feel empowered. It�s all a matter of striking that perfect balance. Every Jewish student on campus should feel a part of their Jewish community, by whatever means they feel most comfortable.
