Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis,
Indiana at Butler University, a predominantly white school.. Founded by seven
young school teachers, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Mary Lou Allison Garner Little,
Vivian Irene White Marbury, Bessie Martin, Cubena McClure, Hattie Mae Dulin
Redford, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, committed to the sorority's slogan
"Greater Service, Greater Progress", Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority,
Incorporated has met the challenges of the day and continues to grow through
Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service. Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on the precept
of education and continues to promote and encourage high scholastic attainment.
Sigma Gamma Rho has become an international service
organization composed of women from every profession. The sorority offers its
members opportunities to develop their unique talents through leadership
training and involvement in Sorority activities.
Sigma Gamma Rho has a proud
history of offering service wherever chapters exist. In Sigma Gamma Rho
Sorority, Incorporated members, better known as "Sorors", allow their
"Sigma Light" to shine through national programs and in the work done
with the sorority's affiliates, The Rhoers and Philos.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority supports the following:
Currently SGRho has over 450
chapters, undergraduate and graduate. There are over 82,000 members in various
parts of the world, including Africa, The Carribean, England, Europe, The Virgin
Islands and The Bahamas.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated's aim is to enhance
the quality of life within the community. Public service, Leadership
development, and education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's
programs and activities. SGRHO addresses concerns that impact society
educationally, civically, and economically.
The Eta Upsilon Chapter at
Rutgers University - New Brunswick was chartered on April 8, 1978 by nine
Douglass College women of the Delta Kappa Sigma Graduate Chapter in Plainfield,
NJ.
