Penn's Creek is the largest Limestone Stream in Pennsylvania. It originates from Penn's Cave a popular tourist attraction 15 miles East of State College. Penn's Creek stays small in size for the first few miles of it's stretch. Once it is joined by Elk Creek outside of Coburn the stream takes on a whole new shape. Here it becomes a large river and at this point also a 7 mile Trophy Trout Section starts. Access is limited from this point on.
The most popular section of Penn's Creek is a 3.9 mile Catch And Release section about a mile downstream from Poe Paddy Campground. This section is accessed by driving through Poe Paddy Campground and following the road upstream until you reach a dead end. Park here and walk across the old railroad bridge and through a tunnel under Paddy Mountain. Once you reach the other side of the tunnel, the catch and release area starts. This is a long hike but well worth it.
Penns Creek is famous for it's Green Drake Hatch that occurs the last week of May into the first week of June. It is a spectacular hatch and something you should try to catch.
