It all started in the Southern Summer of February 1994.
I had Hire-Purchased a new Panasonic HD-100EA Nicam Stereo Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) I know that National/Panasonic makes the BEST video recording/editing gear for the home video market, I like Philips brand Compact Disc and television equipment and no El Cheapo budget gear is used in Russ-TV! motion picture production.
Note: this is NOT an advertisement. A complete list of the equipment used in the production of these Video's called U2: MOVING PICTURES is on this page about my music video's.
I was reading the manual that came with the 1994 VCR and found the VCR had an INSERT Editing feature which allows video to be taped over existing video without the video-noise we get when we stop VHS recording over top of other previously recorded video on the tape. This sounded like a FUN thing to try...
I had a big lovin' for the "Bad Yard Club" cut of "LEMON" by the ever so cool band... U2. so I decided to make a video for that song using my home video's of U2 in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1993 and their music video's. That first video was rough and a bit out of sync. This video is NOT used in "U2: MOVING PICTURES".
A few days later I was watching a documentary I had recorded off television about the aftermath of Atomic bombs and radiation in aplace called Kazakh.... where the nuclear bombs were tested for decades. As I watched this stunning visual history I thought that this footage will probably never be seen again on New Zealand Television and I wondered how many people never saw it at all, and I thought it would be great if U2 used real footage of human history in their video's. The song to use to highlight this sickening visual footage was obvious.... I had seen U2's video version of "UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD" and I didn't like it nor the film it came from.
So the second video I ever made was used for the "ACHTUNG BABY" version of this song in "U2: MOVING PICTURES". The long version of the song/video seen on Disc 7 was made later in 1994.... I just love that song and my video... I hope you like it too. I had a loving for "DESIRE" (Hollywood Remix) so that became the third video
I made. It was now June 1994, winter had set in for the next few months so I had to find something to do as it was wet and cold.... as usual. My new year motto was "get more in 94".... I just wanted to find a new interest and hobby to improve my enjoyment of life. So deciding to make music video's for all U2's songs from the "JOSHUA TREE" album onwards it was a fairly big undertaking because I knew it would take a few months and many late nights.... it did.
This new hobby is VIDEO-ART.... I am an artist, I can draw, I can paint... but drawing on paper is all so predictable and rather boring, I wanted a new artistic direction and I found it, what's more I know it has not been done before. That's what REAL art is... doing something creative and new that you know not many, if any, other people are doing on this planet. Bono said "Taste is the enemy of Art", I agree but who decides what art is? not bloody art critics?!
Real Art, my friends, is Artwork that the artist is happy with and is proud of... anything less is a con. Art is about expression, it is about freedom.... Art is drawing, dance, music, painting, acting, sport, hobbies, sewing and all other forms of self expression. Self expression is what we humans are meant to do with our leisure hours.... self expression is what others love or hate in you. Getting pissed, taking drugs, beating on your wife/husband or kids is not self expression.... that's called self destruction.
It is of NO importance if other people like or don't like your art, so if people don't like these video's... I don't care... they are often dark and depressing just like U2's music and life in general....
So my self expression in this case was to take the step to audio/visual entertainment which is the future home entertainment. I think television is used in a negative way, it is used to transmit bullshit shows that have brainwashed people that now live in a fantasy land and they take drugs to maintain their fantasy and to keep their brains as dead as the shows they watch on television.
Okay, so television is boring and run by boring people but it's fun when you take those images of advertisements, movies, shows, documentaries etc. and edit them together and change the feeling they deliver with the music of the greatest band ever. (U2)
Since these video's were made I have purchased a Multimedia computer in June 1995 that is more fun than I have time to write about. We now have 3 computers in the house, with a CD writer for Video CD production and soon a DVD writer. The mediums I was waiting for to spread my videoart.
I am into the Internet and game playing.... but 3D art and animation really interests me.....I am now using programs downloaded using a person to person file sharing program. I have downloaded 3d progams like 3D STUDIO MAX, BRYCE, POSER and MIMIC... I had my first go at computer animation on the video "UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD" (Disc 6) Then a serious effort on "HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME" (also on Disc 6) I know it ain't perfect, but I am proud of that video because it took three months to make while I was learning to use the computer and the programs. The video was made using programs not designed for animation of cartoons.
Now that VCD (Video Compact Disc) DVD (Digital Video or Versital Disc) has arrived to replace VHS and CD-DA, I decided to re-edit "U2: MOVING PICTURES" add effects and fine tune the editing using a computer program I downloaded (eg: Media Studio Pro, Adobe Premier) You see I had trouble with the Stereo sound using VHS cassette tapes. The difficult part was that the Hifi Stereo sound track I recorded via the CD player onto the editing video cassette is wiped by insert editing, leaving only a flat Mono sound track. To record U2's music in stereo these Video cassettes were recorded with the Picture coming from the master-edit video cassette and the sound was recorded directly from the CD player. The end result is okay but synchronization was difficult as VHS tape stretches with constant editing which involved playing, reversing, fast forwarding and of course you get a drop in Picture quality when recording pictures from tape to tape.
With professional computer editing/recording gear the video's now have perfect sound, but the quality of the picture is only as good as my video capture card and VHS tape quality. These video's are close to great but not quite pure, but they are art.... on a budget.... ha ha bloody ha. And to all those idiots that worry about copyright.... If you send your sick images into my home I will use them how I want... they call it... PRIVATE HOME USE.
My VIDEO ART on Video CD can be distributed FREE via various Trading Websites for anybody who wants them. Copies can be made but they must be sold for the price of the CDR or DVD blank disc ONLY... maybe charge an extra five bucks for the wear and tear on your hard drive and disc writer.... I don't sell VHS tapes, they are so last century and by the way, real artists do it for LOVE not MONEY!
So why the Music of U2?
The answer is as simple as listening to their music! U2's music is so different, new and fresh from the crap that is played on State radio. I grew up in the 1960's and 70s, I saw the coming and going of a lot of major and minor music artists through that time, they include Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Doors, The Stones, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Bowie, Rod Stewart, Sting, Queen, Abba, Ace of Base, Bay City Rollers, Kiss, The Sex Pistols, plus many many more one hit wonders and no talent "artists" that tried to cash in on music.
We all have our own personal opinions on what makes a singer "great", we all have to accept Elvis Presley is the King, but I have NEVER accepted that either the Beatles or the Stones were/are the best band. The Doors were the best from their era and I think the music of the Doors is miles ahead of the hip-hop run of the mill trash-music the other groups put out (not including Pink Floyd) pity that Jim Morrison self-destructed, but members of the other bands were addicts too. (Lennon, McCartney, Jagger, Richards) they were addicted to sex and drugs NOT Rock n Roll (I won't mention Adan Clayton's run in with the law... LOL)
U2 are addicts too, they are addicted to the music, the music of the past, present and future.... that is why they are the best band on the planet. To those that don't agree... the word begins F and the last word is Off.
There are too many love songs on this planet, U2 do sing about love (too much) but if you listen closely you'll hear that these are not run-of-the-mill love songs, U2 delve into the darker side of love (the addiction) I like that. A couple of fine examples are "WITH OR WITHOUT YOU" and "ONE", not to mention "LOVE IS BLINDNESS".
Of course U2 are NOT a "let's sing about f**king and impress the teenage girls" band like the other two "Big" bands, U2 were always above that. Sure there are songs on U2's albums about boy/girl things, but not many.... U2's songs are about much more than that, they sing LIFE songs and that is why they are and will always be the greatest rock band... FOREVER.
U2 found their own unique musical direction before they put out an album. They seemed to use the albums "BOY", "OCTOBER", "WAR" and most of "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" to experiment with sound, song and an audience. Personally I find these early albums a little naive, except for the song "BAD" and "PRIDE" (which was U2's first number one hit, in New Zealand I might add). I do like most of the other songs, but I don't really like the pace of most of the songs. I decided not to make video's for the first four albums but I might one day. I used the bootleg "PRIDE" (Mega-Mix) song from a bootleg CD with early U2 video's and film to record the growth of U2 from school boys into the great band they are.
Having decided to cover all of U2's songs from 1987 was bigger than I thought, I didn't own the Compact Disc Singles that have been released, however I was able to purchase these CD's by visiting every music store in Christchurch each time I visited that city. Then all of a sudden "Napster" appeared on the internet and through file sharing we can find any song on the net and download it for free and burn it onto CDR. This is way cheaper than CD singles, they were around $20 each, an average full album Compact Disc was $30.00, I buy all of the Cd's that U2 release....I guess that's the price of love.... I even managed to score some Bootleg Compact Disc's, most were mono Live recordings, some were audio recordings the best was called "ULTRA-HOT RARE TRAX" at $50.00, (worth much more) it had remixes of U2's songs, including DESIRE and UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD.
"BAD" is the song that made U2 famous, at Live Aid on 13th July 1985. Millions watched on television as this young singer named Bono held the audience of 70,000 (in the crowd and millions watching on television) in his hand even more so than Freddie Mercury did later that night. Those of us that saw and recorded this live, as it happened, KNEW we had seen the greatest entertainer EVER, sure U2 is a band of four guys but it is the lead singer that is of interest and in this case his name was PAUL HEWSON, we know him as BONO.
The lead guitar player in U2 had a unique "crashing" sound that was on the edge of guitar sound, pushing the sound in unique new directions, his nickname is to do with his chin, he is known as THE EDGE, his given name was DAVID EVANS.
The drummer boy, that all the girls love, (and Boy George) is LARRY MULLEN Jr. people just call him Larry, he is responsible for U2 the band, it was Larry that put a notice up at his high school in 1974 seeking others to form a band so he had a use for his drum kit.
The bass player, who was a different sort of person than the other three, was ADAM CLAYTON, Adam was always a ponce, it is NOT something he learned from being famous, it was Adam who got the band early "work" and was their manager. The band was known as FEEDBACK then THE HYPE, then U2, (probably because it was easy to spell).
ADAM was born in Oxfordshire, England on 13th March 1960.
BONO was born in Dublin, Ireland on 10th May 1960.
EDGE was born in East London, England on 8th August 1961.
LARRY was born in Dublin, Ireland on 31st October 1961.
So where did the visual ideas come from?
I love sound, when I am not listening to radio, I am listening/watching TV. I like music, any music, so long as I think its good.... (Taste is the enemy of Art!) I always get a visual picture in my head when I hear a song by ANY artist. A song will remind me of a movie I have seen, a person I know or a combination of lots of things. I like U2's music the best 'cos U2 made movie music, a film could be based on each song they have recorded. I don't think music video's were good enough, we get one or two new ideas but mainly they are bland, life less and the same. U2 are inventive musically, but up until the ZOO-TV tour they were nowhere visually. Their video singles seen on television were as boring as most other bands.
The motion picture of "RATTLE AND HUM" was poor visually, (with lack of style and poor editing by the director) mostly black and white... until it went color near the end... then it was okay. I hope one day somebody re-edits the footage... I found that the documentary "THE MAKING OF RATTLE AND HUM" was more interesting than the film... Oh, but look how many boring black and white video's came out post "RATTLE AND HUM", that was because producers were stupid enough to think it was U2's movie that was "successful", when in fact it was the music that the people liked about U2.
U2's songs say so much lyrically it was usually easy to get a visual image for their songs. Sometimes it wasn't easy to come up with an idea for a video because I really can't relate to love songs of the sort like "TRIP THROUGH YOUR WIRES" or "HAWKMOON 269".
I read many books about U2, watched video interviews and listened to their music constantly... while doing the mundane things like the housework... I do understand where the band is coming from, what their music is about etc... these video's are only my opinion, nothing more. I have written a wee review for each video to detail more fully the "reason" behind each music video in "U2: MOVING PICTURES" , read that later on this page.
So how did I edit the pictures?
From the start of the first VCD up to and including "Zooropa" I took a blank VHS video cassette and recorded the U2 clip with sound from the CD player, and picture from another VCR, I added footage from the second VCR of movies, documentaries and other stuff I have recorded since 1984 when I bought my first VCR. Getting the lips of the singer, Bono, to match the picture was the hard part. When the editing was complete I got another blank video cassette and used input sound from the CD player and recorded the videos that make up U2: MOVING PICTURES. Getting it in sync was the problem but most of the video clips came out okay, the video to the song NIGHT AND DAY (steel strings remix) is an example of how difficult it was to get the sound and picture in sync, on the editing tape the sync was okay, but when it was recorded it went in and out of sync, it is still an okay video I guess...
So what equipment did I use?

2004 session: VCD 8
Re-rendered the first seven VideoCD's to improve the picture, added "Miss Sarajevo" to disc 7.
VCDs burned with ULEAD DVD MOVIE FACTORY 1... To copy them open Nero or a CD burning program that allows copying and select COPY CD... this will make a perfect copy of the Video CD's... there is no loss of quality no matter how many times you copy the VCD's nor if you copy a copy... That's what's great about digital technology...
A note for the "owner's" of the video used on these VCD's
Firstly you should feel good that I used your movie for this music video oddity, they where not "ripped" from DVD although I have made every effort to purchase each film that I used in this music video production on DVD, some of course are not available. I would have written and asked permission but I had no idea how to find your address!
Secondly, it is my hope that people that watch these VCD's will go out and watch or buy your movie and that's great 'cos let's face it... after a movie has done the cinema's and VHS or DVD release it's not long until it is a back cataloge in your local video store and very unlikely to get hired again. So by being seen in this VideoCD production your movies are getting a new lease of life... let's face it people are always looking for the next big thing in movies, only die-hard fans of movies buy them and watch them over and over again.
I think these video's are ground-breaking and will inspire the folk that watch them to seek out your movies and at least watch them but hopfully buy them.
A Message to U2
Hi boy's... I know that The Edge surf's the net so he may read this one day. Or someone may draw your attention to my website before or after you see my Video CD's...
My message is.. This is but one man's point of view on what your music means to me... everybody is different thank God and some will love the VCD's and some will not... Taste is the enemy of art..
I tried to make sure that anybody who traded for these VCD's at least owned your albums on CD... or vinyl? But I can't control how those trader's deal with the VCD's after they get them, I was not out to make money so I do hope no bastard tries to make cash off my back, your's or the maker's of the movies used in this production.
It's a kind of tribute really and I hope to f**k people like this mother, I will probally not make any more music video's after the "POP" album because I kind of moved on in life and now my interests are 3d graphic's and animation.. so let's hope somebody else set's about doing your future albums. Thanks guys you saved my life.
So on with the Show.....
Hope you like the results....

A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 01
1: "COME ON IN"
(All-star mix by Russ-TV!)

VIDEO: A TV Show about commercials, U2 Clip.
This intro clip was edited especially for the VideoCD's, the three VHS tapes had different intro's but each VCD has around 70 minutes of video, so I had to edit and render different lead-in's for each disc but that wasn't so hard, I think I just about covered every male recording artist of note that had "made it" when U2 were arriving on the music scene, it features the sounds of bands and artists that U2 had to compete with to become the the number one greatest band of all time.... I wasn't sure about using Gary Glitter as a lead-in (because of the kiddy-porn issue) but I liked the tune as a kid and he doesn't really, I liked Alvin Stardust too, but he doesn't appear because I couldn't fit him in the three minutes or so of soundtrack, see how many song's and artists you can name. PS: I own the audio compact disc's the snippets were ripped from.
Brief History of U2. 1980-87.
2: BAD. (Live)

VIDEO: U2 Live Clip, Live Aid Concert.
U2 "arrived" for many fans (including me) on 13th July 1985, when they played this tune at the London "Live Aid" concert.
This song is about the evil of drug abuse.... I personally hear it as a song about loss, of life or love. It is one of my favorite songs.
(Song from the EP CD "WIDE WAKE IN AMERICA" 1985)
3: PRIDE. (MEGA MIX)

VIDEO: U2 Clips, Various Music Clips, ROCKY.
This video is about U2 fighting it's way to the top of the music industry in the early 1980's when in the post-punk era there were many many new acts coming out of the wood work that could actually sing! "The Police" were the band that had all the attention after the split of "The Sex Pistols" and the death of Sid Vicious.
Frankly I didn't want to do clips for the early U2 lbums, not cos I didn't like them but cos it'd have taken too long.
This clip features most of their good songs (in a rather good mix) as U2 clawed their way to becoming the number ONE band of all time... in the film industry Sylvester Stallone began his reign as "action hero". The single PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE) went to number one in New Zealand giving U2 their first number one hit single in the world.
(Song from "U2: ULTRA-HOT RARE TRAX" 1994 CD)
4: LOVE COMES TUMBLING DOWN.
(AIN'T IT TRUE?)

VIDEO: U2 Clip, Various Music Clips.
This was a song that didn't make "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" Album, it was released as a B-side single. I like it so it's here...
(Song from the EP CD "WIDE WAKE IN AMERICA" 1985)
5: IN A LIFETIME. (with Clannard)

VIDEO: CLANNARD Clip.
This makes it on to U2: MOVING PICTURES because its a good tune and a rare video from an album by Clannard. The only Russ-TV! bit was getting the picture and stereo audio in sync.
THE JOSHUA TREE. 1987.
6: WHERE THE STREET'S HAVE NO NAME.
(THE ROAD WARRIOR)

VIDEO: U2 Clips, MAD MAX 2-THE ROAD WARRIOR.
This is a great song, written about the sandy deserts of America and Africa, about escaping the life of the big city, in U2's case the escape would be from fame. The video clip was shot in Los Angeles, it was big news and it made U2 famous on the news... again.
This song is special to me as it was the opening song of U2's Christchurch concert on 6th November 1989. At that concert U2 allowed TVNZ to film inside the concert, (a 1st) which features in this video and "PRIDE Mega Mix". Originally I recorded the MAD MAX footage as it screened on public TV and took the sound from the CD player then edited in the U2 clip.
7: I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR.
(VEGAS GOLD)

VIDEO: U2 Clip, CORVETTE SUMMER (aka The Hot One).
Edge said this is a Gospel song.... This is a song is about dreams and greed, I guess that is why it was filmed in the Las Vegas City, the place of the American dream of getting rich quick. I don't really rate this song highly, because I have found what I am looking for, I have had wonderful life... except a 'vette.
Personally I think the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the sexiest car ever made, but a 1973-8 Ford Fairmont V8 Coupe (As seen in the movies Mad Max 1 and 2) is a close second so I got one of them instead....
8: WITH OR WITHOUT YOU.
(HE'S A REBEL)

VIDEO: U2 Clips, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.
This is without doubt the best song on the album. This song made it to number one, U2's manager didn't want to release it as a single, that mistake could have been one of many "f**k-ups" Mr McGuiness made on U2's behalf...
9: IN GOD'S COUNTRY.
(IT'S AMERICA)

VIDEO: U2 Clips from "Outside It's America"; BONNIE AND CLYDE; INDIANA JONES; AMERICAN GRAFFITI; ALLIGATOR; HAPPY DAYS.
U2 was fascinated with America, I guess it must be prettier than Ireland, but we all know that Kiwiland (aka New Zealand) is God's Country... we call it God Zone.
America is not the land of dreams, America is a rash you can't scratch.
10: RED HILL MINING TOWN.
(3 HOURS IN 3 MINUTES)

VIDEO: THE DEER HUNTER.
This is a song about living in a Shit-house town going nowhere... sound familiar?
11: TRIP THROUGH YOUR WIRES.
(YEE HA!!!)

VIDEO: PLANET OF THE APES; RUNAWAY TRAIN; VON RYAN'S EXPRESS.
A lovely wee ditty that Bono wrote for Frank Sinatra, but Frank never sang it.... again it is about the American desert....
12: BULLET THE BLUE SKY.
(LOVE THE LOCUS WIND)

VIDEO: U2 Live clip, EVIL DEAD 3: ARMY OF DARKNESS.
This is a fairly awesome song best played at a high volume setting on your stereo system. If I had put in scenes of people at war that would have been too predictable, so I decided on a comical, lighthearted video for this tune.... and the next.
13: RUNNING TO STAND STILL.
(I'M BURNING)

VIDEO: U2 Live clip; CHRISTINE; A FRENCH VAMPIRE IN AMERICA; TERMINATOR.
This song is really BAD PART 2. Another serious song about drugs and the big Over Dose. But remember children: Drugs are not the only killer of the human soul. But I personally believe mind altering substances of any sort are the root of most (if not all) evil.
"U2: Moving Pictures"
A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 02
14: ONE TREE HILL.
(THE KIWI CONNECTION)

VIDEO: U2 Clips; New Zealand Bad news....
This song was recorded in one take, it is the first time Bono sang this song... the emotion is real. Bono wrote this for his Kiwi mate: Greg Carroll who crashed Bono's Harley Davidson motorbike into a car on 3rd July 1986 and died. I borrowed this tune for River Phoenix and the many that die in road accidents etc.
Some dude working for TVNZ made a video clip for the song because U2 never made one, parts of it feature in this clip. The accident seen was done in good taste as a mark of respect for Mr Carroll. The song was only released as a single in New Zealand and Australia. The rest of the world got "In God's Country".
15: EXIT.
(SPASMODIC LETHAL BASTARDS)

VIDEO: Aramoana (NZ) Massacre 1990; plus too many violent outbursts from film and TV...
This song is about mans desire to kill each other... and ourselves. Some weird prick murdered an actress named Rebecca Shaeffer and said he was inspired by this song... (liar) TV and movies get blamed for most of human violence.... Bullshit! Cavemen bashed each other to death over sex and food.
This is a violent video for a violent song. (without much blood) David Gray from Aramoana was shot and killed by the cops after killing a few of his neighbours back in 1990, it had nothing to do with TV or music he was just a nutcase and features in this video.
16: MOTHERS OF THE DISAPPEARED.
(New Zealand's SHAME)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; TVNZ footage of 1981 Springbok Tour.
This song is about missing children in Argentina. It is a song about sorrow. To me the sorrow in life is watching people protest about things they know nothing about. Mr Minto and H.A.R.T were protesting about South Africa even when they hadn't been there. Even when in New Zealand young maori folk are failing at life in all areas.
The white man stole New Zealand off the black man... it was up to people like Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Robert Muldoon, etc. to put it right... it was not up to rugby players, New Zealand and Aussie people are just as RACIST as South African people, not just against dark tan skinned folk either. Sport vs Government, a no win situation.... sport is like movies and song.... it is about entertainment... except people cheat at sport...
The fact that N.Z agreed to boycott South Africa was because South Africa had a better rugby team.... Justice came for South Africa in 1995, they won the first "real" rugby world cup in '95 and the last gold of the '96 Olympic games.
17: LUMINOUS TIMES (HOLD ON TO LOVE)
(ELVIS LIVES IN LEVI'S)

VIDEO: VIVA LAS VEGAS; U2 Live.
In this and the next few video's I decided to have a bit of fun.... Elvis was the King and will remain so, he pops up quite a few times in "U2: Moving Pictures" because he was and will always be a big influence on the singers that followed in his footsteps, but his boots are to big for anyone to fill. Sorry Bono... them's the breaks.
(B-Side from "WITH OR WITHOUT YOU" )
18: WALK TO THE WATER.
(WHAT'S THE WORD?)

VIDEO: GREASE; U2 Live.
Not a hard song to make a video for and I had to fit this great film in somewhere!
(B-Side from "WITH OR WITHOUT YOU" )
19: DEEP IN THE HEART.
(THE DEVIL'S INSIDE )

VIDEO: THE OMEN.
The ultimate horror film of its era...
(B-Side from "I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR" )
20: SPANISH EYES.
(YOU DO THE VOODOO TO ME)

VIDEO: AMELIA; SILENT MOVIE.
I love this video... the eyes have it.
(B-Side from "I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR" )
21: SWEETEST THING.
(OH SUGAR)

VIDEO: WILLIE WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY,
A video about spoilt little bastards we don't need.
(B-Side from "WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME" )
22: RACE AGAINST TIME.
(GOD SAVE AFRICA)

VIDEO: TVNZ 60 Mins: Healing The Hurt.
A video about poor bastards that need us.
It was great that Bono got involved in Africa with the AIDS and debt situations, but in reality I think he's pushing water up hill with a rake, but that's only my opinion and remember: "Opinion is thought influenced by Television" Quote: me (Rusty)
(B-Side from "WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME" )
23: SILVER AND GOLD.
(GIMME DEM DIAMONDS)

VIDEO: U2 Live, (unknown South African TV mini series)
An under-estimated song that never had a great release, I think it's some of Bono's best lyric's.
(B-Side from "WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME")
24: CHRISTMAS, BABY PLEASE COME HOME.
(WHERE'S MY CAKE?)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; TV advert; EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.
This Recorded at a soundcheck in Glasgow, Scotland on the "Joshua Tree" tour. I couldn't see any point in altering the video too much.
(Song is from the album "A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS" 1987. This is not a song written by U2)
RATTLE AND HUM. 1988.
25: DESIRE.
(I'LL TAKE THE MONEY)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; U2 in NZ 1989.
I feel that U2's Rattle And Hum film used too much black and white (monochrome) footage not only in the movie but also in the television video releases... they were ALL boring and too much black and white... ho hum. At least Desire had some color. This is a great song about human greed... what's your desire... sex, drugs, rock 'n roll or alcohol? I think that the video/movie "RATTLE AND HUM" made the music look boring except for the color segment near the end. Don't get me wrong I like ANY U2 material and I own the VHS and upgraded to the DVD when I got a DVD player. In fact the music is great. Pity these great studio tracks where hidden amongst live tracks on the album release... the live sound cheapened the quality of these studio songs.
You only realise this when you hear the songs as I have recorded them here. But I do think the idea behind "RATTLE AND HUM" was great... the execution was at fault. "RED ROCKS" was better. "THE JOSHUA TREE" was about America, "RATTLE AND HUM" was about America too.... I have tried to use these songs and the B-Side singles to give you a real view of America.... America for me only exists on TV and I don't like what it looks like.
26: WHEN LOVE COMES TO TOWN. (with BB King)
(HEAVY LYRICS MAN)

VIDEO: U2 Clips; U2 in NZ 1989.
If there was a U2 song I didn't like this is it. I don't like the idea of the people the lyrics are about. Na SORRY that's bullshit, I have never heard a U2 song I didn't like, how 'bout you?
27: HAWKMOON 269.
(CIRCUS OF LOVE)

VIDEO: U2 Making Of Rattle And Hum; Many wild and crazy guys....and gals.
I think this song was a little under-rated. I love it... I love stunt people and their stunts too... Love is about man wanting a "jump", to me love is watching stuntmen making a jump.... like stunting LOVE will wreck ya. PS1: Evel Knievel was a hero of mine. PS2: Bob Dylan played with his organ on this one..
28: GOD PART II.
(BEATLE MANIAC)

VIDEO: U2: Rattle And Hum; plus TV Images.
A simple video to make, watch and listen to. I read that it was about John Lennon... I never did like John Lennon, before or after he was shot. I did like some of the music he made.... Lennon was a work of art that didn't like being an artist, drugs killed him long before the bullet did, he began fame with a great sense of humour but that died in the late 1960's.... 20 years before his body died.... The guy was a hippie and a junky.... mind you so were Elvis, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix etc. etc. heroes?
Oh didn't Adam Clayton delve in substance abuse, he even missed a concert once. Everybody makes mistakes, overcoming them is the secret to sucess in life.
29: HEARTLAND.
(GET YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66)

VIDEO: U2: Rattle And Hum; 48 Hours TV show.
This is a nice wee video that clings to this song like a wet tee-shirt on cold nipples.... (female of course as far as I'm concerned)
"U2: Moving Pictures"
A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 03
30: ALL I WANT IS YOU.
(YA'LL WANT A BIT?)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; sextras.
This is probably the best song on the album, the video was great too (and it was in black and white) So I left it just about pure... apart from the addition of Adobe After Effects rendering before VideoCD conversion and some female titties during the clip, Why? answer: this song is about sexual fantasy, Bono even sang "SEXUAL HEALING" during live versions of this song, dirty boy.
31: LOVE RESCUE ME.
(IT'S ONLY LOVE)

VIDEO: U2: Rattle And Hum; COMING TO AMERICA; THE ACCUSED; THE GREAT OUTDOORS; YOUNG GUNS; MIDNIGHT RUN
Here is a true Story: Edge rented a house in Beverly Hills, with his wife and kids, back in 1987. Bono stayed there too, after a few alcohols, Bono had a dream about Bob Dylan, Bono woke and wrote this song for Bob Dylan (who co-wrote the song, Bob did record vocals but changed his mind about releasing it)
The next folk to live in the house where this song was written were Mr and Mrs Menendez, parents of the little brat brothers. The MENENDEZ brothers would kill their parents in that house later.... for love or money?
32: ANGEL OF HARLEM.
(DANCE KIDDIES)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; The Puppies Clip.
This is proof of what I said earlier, the videos were boring. Add a bit of color and movement and you have a new song (visually) The child dancers I used come from New York city.... the Angels of Harlem today. PS: This was my children's favorite song.
33: HALLELUJAH, HERE SHE COMES.
(LET ME ATOM)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; MIAMI VICE; SLEDGE HAMMER; BEVERLY HILLS COP 2; COBRA.
This is a love song, or perhaps a lust song. The video is of what was entertaining us in 1988, some of the actors were falling in love... Sylvester Stallone was in love with an actress who co-starred with Eddie Murphy (who was falling in love with himself) Don Johnson was often in the news even into the 1990's, concerning his relationship with Meg Ryan....I think. Sledge Hammer was in love with his gun and his job, but hardly ever with Dori.... shame.
(B-Side Single from "DESIRE")
34: UNCHAINED MELODY.
(LOVE ME DOO)

VIDEO: SLEDGE HAMMER: Witless.
"Sledge Hammer" is my all time favorite TV-show even ahead of "The Young Ones", sure it was sexist, arrogant etc. I found the David Rasche's character typical of cops I had dealt with in New Zealand..... thick as planks and could only catch a cold. Male cops generally love themselves and have no feelings for other people.... that is the type of person that becomes a cop, they are not the heroes we see on TV or in films, and I find it funny that human beings find pleasure in watching "entertainment" that is 90-95% about cops or crime... are we really that sick?
(B-Side Single from "ALL I WANT IS YOU") (This is not a song written by U2 and the original is better)
35: EVERLASTING LOVE.
(MAX-POP ROCK IDOL REMUCK)

VIDEO: Pop Music Clips.
"RATTLE AND HUM" was about U2's love of music, their musical "roots" etc. I love music and it is far more important to me than any other love, this video is made up of singers that I like, it's another of my favorite video's it took a few days to get it just about right.
It's a funny thing that the end of this clip features a girl blowing bubble gum and the word "pop" appears a couple of times, I edited this video (first 6 and a bit disc's) in 1994, U2's next album was called "POP", oh the power of ESP... see what else you can pickup on these disc's...
(B-Side Single from "ALL I WANT IS YOU" This is not a song written by U2)
36: LADY WITH THE SPINNING HEAD. (UV1)
(PUMPED UP F/X)

VIDEO: MARRS clip; Special-FX; MIAMI VICE.
This is such a weird song, I am not 100% sure what it is about, it was just as difficult to make a video for... there are references in this song to sexual positions (6 and 9's) and thought about using Miss Deep throat... Linda Lovelace, but that would have been in bad taste.
(B-Side Single from "ONE")
37: SATELLITE OF LOVE.
(YO SPACE CADETS)

VIDEO: U2 Live; BLADE RUNNER; THE RIGHT STUFF; STAR WARS; CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND; NASA: (Apollo - Shuttle)
Bono sang this "live" (in what The Edge called a "Jive" moment) with Mr Lou Reed on the ZOO-TV Tour of 1992-93.
(B-Side Single from "ONE" This is a Lou Reed song, it was not a song written by U2)
38: DANCING BAREFOOT.
(IT'S ADVERTISING MY LOVE)

VIDEO: U2 Live; TV-adverts.
This video makes me laugh, with this song I used the more modern adverts. for a "RATTLE AND HUM" meets ZOO-TV thing.
(B-Side Single from "WHEN LOVE COMES TO TOWN") (This song was not written by U2)
39: A ROOM AT THE HEARTBREAK HOTEL.
(LOVE CUTS ME UP!)

VIDEO: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.
With this song I decided to use a modernish film just to show that U2's music is timeless. But we all know that. I didn't give away the ending of the movie! My hope is that you all go out and rent the video's or buy the DVD of movies used in "U2: Moving Pictures". I tried to. In case you were wondering the movies used have screened on TV inc. pay-TV here in New Zealand, I tape lots of movies cos I am addicted to them (beats drugs and piss).
(B-Side Single from "ANGEL OF HARLEM")
40: DESIRE. (HOLLYWOOD REMIX)
(SchwarZOOnegger Rap)

VIDEO: U2 Clip/Live; Heroes, TV and film...too many to video bits to mention here...
Welcome to ZOO-TV Ya-All was Bono's slogan, well this is Russ-TV! Mister...... our Basic Instinct is DESIRE.... Now this is music video, baby.
(B-Side Single from "DESIRE")
41: NIGHT AND DAY. (STEEL STRINGS REMIX)
(LOVE BLOWS ME AWAY)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; HEATHERS.
This is an example of how difficult it was to get Bonos mouth in sync with the music, the problem was the video was from a slower mix of the song and I had a great deal of trouble editing this video. In the end I thought F**K it and let it be...
(B-Side Single from "ONE"
42: M.L.K.
(for V.J.K) (guest appearance by the MAN himself)

VIDEO: Vin, A Knight To Remember; TVNZ
This song is dedicated to Vinny Knight a high profile Australian harness racing driver. Vin shot himself in April 1991. Rumours in the paper's said he had million dollar gambling debts... But who believes what ya read in the local rag?
People say it is a cowards way out to commit sideways, but I think it takes more guts than you'd ever know to actually go through with it, don't belive me? Try it!
(from "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" album)
43: Bonus Video: JiNGLE BELLS.

VIDEO: U2 Clips, LETHAL WEAPON; SLEDGE HAMMER! etc..
I wanted to make "U2: Moving Pictures" truely unique, so I threw in a few guest appearances (as in the previous clip) and then I thought I'd add some bonus clips for a laugh... well I laughed so my goal was achieved...
(A tune from a free SKC Christmas Compact disc with vocal inputs and bad language by Bono)
"U2: Moving Pictures"
A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 04
ACHTUNG BABY. 1991.
44: ZOO STATION.
(ZOOTOPIA)

VIDEO: U2 Live in Sydney; TV-commercials; BRAINDEAD.
This song kind of grows on you, It is about a Railway station in Germany called Zoo Bahnhof., this album was mainly recorded in Germany, something to do with pulling down THE WALL...who cares! Let's pretend it's about a TV station....called Zoo TV, a place where the adverts are more interesting than the movie... Shit this video looks too professional, if I may say so myself I have and did and yes I'm proud.
45: THE FLY.
(THE SPIDER ATE THE FLY)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; more crap from NZ-TV.
A poem by Russ:
"TV the Spider, each channel a leg........ you the viewer trapped in it's web"
That said, I think television is the greatest thing mankind invented. It's just a shame that the dimwits that decide what to show on TV are BRAINDEAD, even the news readers over exaggerate things... for only one reason.... RATINGS. The stupid thing is they have NO idea how many people are watching their stations at any given time. Most of the crap I used for these video's was recorded in 1994.... yes we even have TV-shows that show adverts! Since I made these videos we have adverts that run for half an hour each and they call them infomericals..... I am glad I had a VCR and DVD so I don't have to watch that crap...
Have you heard the saying about being a fly on the wall.... that sees everything? That's what TV is.
PS: That's one of my murals (Pink Floyd) in my old home during the words "every artist is a thief" (it took 3 months to paint) I often wondered if the people that bought my farm ever painted over it, not that it matters, it's just part of what we all leave behind.
46: EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING.
(AND I DON'T KNOW WHY)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; NZ-TV adverts; KING KONG; BRAINDEAD.
Hey Bono, COKE is the REAL THING.... I saw that on TV so it must be true. Oh and note that "BRAINDEAD" (a film by fellow Kiwi, Peter Jackson) was used along with "King Kong" get the psyhic connection? I new Peter would make it as a director, and he did.
47: ONE.
(DON'T SEND YOUR AIDS TO ME)

VIDEO: U2 Bar Clip, little faggots with the earrings and the make-up.
Hey folks, get the hankies out, this is a sad song about homosexuals, HIV and AIDS is the killer of the 1990's. Sex is a killer, don't f**k with it... I dedicate this song to my baby and Freddie Mercury.
Unusually U2 made three video clips for this song, the one used here is the "bar" version, there's a Berlin version with the four members of U2 in drag (get the connection with this clip? and an animal one, with these dumb animals that jump off cliffs.
48: SO CRUEL.
(I C U R YY 4 ME)

VIDEO: WISEGUY.
I dedicate this song to Ray Sharkey. He could have been a great actor, (see: Cops and Robbers OR Wiseguy) but his DESIRE killed him. He died on my birthday 11th June in 1993, which is freaky 'cos he has my initials too.
49: MYSTERIOUS WAYS.
(BUM-TITTY-BUM-BUM)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; MANNEQUIN; Aussie Hot Rod show video.
Oh the mystery of the lust for human flesh and sexual release...... I decided not to include too much nudity in these video's because sexual perversion isn't a healthy habit to have (ask Gary Glitter). This is a song about women, erotic dancers, you can just picture the sleazy fat, balding perverts sitting in a smoke filled strip bar playing with themselves and thinking that the dancers really do think they are God's gift to woman...
Why the titties? answer: Again in later tours Bono sang "Sexual Healing" during this song.
50: TRYING TO THROW YOUR ARMS AROUND THE WORLD.
(CHAMPAIGNE ANYONE?)

VIDEO: U2 Live; Alan Parson's project; ALOHA, BOBBY AND ROSE; Advertisements.
This is a song that Bono wrote about himself, if you don't know what I mean read some books about U2 and learn something new... mind you who can believe all they read? It's about drinking alcohol too.
51: ULTRA VIOLET (LIGHT MY WAY).
(BURN BABY BURN)

VIDEO: LETHAL WEAPON; BACKDRAFT; BRAINDEAD.
A song about a relationship going wrong, it sounds like the guy (or gal) from the "ARMS" is trying to overcome his/her drinking problem but he/she needs his/her angel/guiding light/wife or husband to help him out... and the partner makes him/her burn in hell... for a time.
52: ACROBAT.
(I WONDER IF ONE DAY THAT...)

VIDEO: SPITTING IMAGE; Russ-TV! puppets; U2 live.
This could be about that guy being proud of himself for talking his way back into his/her relationship. For those that don't know about Bono: He had has the habit of speaking his mind on various issues of world affairs, of course the critics of the world were jealous of his fame and the fact that more people took notice of what Bono said than what critics said. Critics are gutter press, fancy being paid to put people down, I wouldn't wipe my ass on their articles... then there are the Royal watchers...let's not go there... anyway Bono even made it onto the TV puppet show "Spitting Image" (which we don't see in New Zealand) so I had to make my own BONO puppet. The girl puppet is meant to be Princess Diana who was a female version of Bono. Anyway Bono decided to change his IMAGE (pun intended) I guess the other three guys in the band had to go with it....
53: LOVE IS BLINDNESS.
(SHOT DOWN IN FLAMES)

VIDEO: U2 clip; STATE OF GRACE. Russ-TV! FX.
The film used here was directed by the director of "RATTLE AND HUM" movie, (Phil Joanou) which I found out after I made the video. I don't think he is much good as a director. This film was chosen for its content only. This was the quickest video I made. 10 minutes.
PS: Bono dedicated this song to my "Princess" (Diana) on World Aids Day: 1st December 1993 at Christchurch... cool or what?!
54: PAINT IT BLACK.
(VIETNAM REVISITED)

VIDEO: PLATOON; TOUR OF DUTY; FIRST BLOOD; RAMBO 2; other Vietnam movies and TV shows.
This is a Rolling Stones song was that used for the TV Show "Tour of Duty" which was about the Vietnam war so I carried that trend into this video.
(B-Side Single from "WHO'S GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES?") (This song was not written by U2)
55: FORTUNATE SON.
(WAR IS GOOD FOR ABSOLUTELY NUFFIN)

VIDEO: FULL METAL JACKET.
I dedicate this song to ex-USA President Bill Clinton the most famous draft dodger of them all. (The film is Stanley Kubrick's best)
(B-Side Single from "WHO'S GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES?") (This song was not written by U2)
56: UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD.
(ARMAGEDDON TOXIC BABY SHOT)

VIDEO: INTRO: some typical American Propaganda; U2 Clip, 60 Minutes: The Kazakh Experiment. OUTRO: Special appearance by the arsehole of the 20th Century (translated in subtitles)
You better believe your eyes, this is the result of testing nuclear weapons. This village is toxic and the woman have deformed babies. The French, Yanks, Russian, Paki's and Chinese continue to test nukes why? Answer: Because some people actually survived Hiroshima. This was the second video clip I made, I love it.
This is a joke: What did the pilot of Elona Gay say on 6th August 1945 after he dropped the bombs?.......answer: "I think I got 'em."
57: WHO'S GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES?
(BRING BACK BUCK)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; Russ-TV! puppets; LETHAL WEAPON 2; Rugby 1994- South Africa Vs New Zealand.
After watching that clip you'll need cheering up so here's a tongue firmly in cheek look at the best rugby team in the world (up to mid 1990's) and it's not the men in black! To all you Yanks.... This is how you play football... no padding, no helmet, lots of blood too... This is a music video that features the infamous ear biting of Sean Fitzpatrick...
58:ALEX DESCENDS INTO HELL FOR A BOTTLE OF MILK - KOROVA 1
(SO PLAY NICE)

VIDEO: U2; My Computer Games.
This tune comes from the stage production of "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" (Kubrick again!) which The Edge wrote some tunes for...
(B-Side Single from "THE FLY")
59: Bonus Video: RUDOLF THE RED NOSED REINDEER.

VIDEO: U2 Clips, TV funny folk.
This is another silly video done to fill in the 3 hour video tape.
(Another Tune from a FREE SKC Christmas Compact Disc.) (This song was not written by U2)
"U2: Moving Pictures"
A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 05
60: SALOME.
(F**K FOR A BUCK)

VIDEO: U2 Clips; SEX, Russ-TV!; R18 video.
Here is one (and the only one with REAL porn) for the perverts out there in TV land. It features pornography that screened on New Zealand television and what's available at our local video cassette hire shop, you can even get porn on DVD... and the internet of course, that reminds me of the time one of my daughters was searching for stuff on the "SPICE GIRLS" (bath) and got directed to a f**king porn site... It's a funny thing that the perverts that work in television use documentaries as an avenue to show penises and vaginas on TV, if you did the same in a "normal" TV show it wouldn't get past the censors cutting desk... but it will just as the "F" word slowly crept on to television shows, and is so common that we don't often get a censors warning...
After capturing it to my computer I thought to myself that I wouldn't want my kids to see it so I booted it up in "VirtualDub" and ran it with the "Warpsharpe" VDF filter on in the first part, and when the hardcore porn starts I added the "Liquid" VDF filter so that now it looks like a bubblely cartoon, although it didn't interest me much, sex is just an act of life, I bet we've all seen animals rooting in life or on TV, so why is the act of human's making babies so scary for some people to watch? What always bothered me was that in a porno film the guy always whips it out and blows his lolly over the chick, one of the strangest things I've ever seen, until I saw homo's doing it on video, anyway on with the show. In the words of Duke Nukem Shake it baby
(B-Side Single from "EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING")
61: WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG?
(FOR U2)

VIDEO: U2 Clips/Live.
A fun video to make, it's just a visual history of the four members of U2 from 1980 to 1994.
(B-Side Single from "EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING")
ZOOROPA. 1993.
62: ZOOROPA.
(I WANT MY RUSS-TV!)

VIDEO: U2 Live; BRAINDEAD, The Young Ones; NZ-TV and adverts etc.
The opening track from the album ZOOROPA which won a Grammy Award for best alternative album... I used the advert's because this song was about ZOO-TV, and they go well with the song. This album was recorded and released while U2 were on a two year tour.
63: DADDY'S GONNA PAY FOR YOU CRASHED CAR.
(HAIL HITLER, THE BIG DADDY)

VIDEO: U2 Live, a movie I hired, cant remember its name; Russ-TV!; Hitler on NZ-TV etc.
Hitler was the Biggest Daddy of them all, his henchmen often killed people and told the relatives that they died in a car crash... does anybody know if Hitler actually killed anybody himself?
64: LEMON.
(DEDICATED TO ALAN PARKER)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; REN AND STIMPY; THE COMMITMENTS; BUGSY MALONE; BIRDY; FAME.
I used films that were directed by Alan Parker for this video and the next few... he was my favorite director, his movies are so cool, often dark and moody.... a bit like the music of U2...
65: THE FIRST TIME.
(LOVE IS THE DRUG)

VIDEO: MIDNIGHT EXPRESS; PINK FLOYD-THE WALL; BIRDY; ANGEL HEART.
This is a dark and moody song so I used dark and moody films to add to the emotion of the thing...
66: NUMB.
(JUST DON'T...OK)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; ANGEL HEART; BIRDY; MIDNIGHT EXPRESS; PINK FLOYD-THE WALL.
The EDGE sings the vocals on yet another dark song, this was released as a video single with an extended version too.
The Edge wore a knitted hat during the ZOO-TV tour that had ANGEL HEART sewn on it... another fan of Al?
67: DIRTY DAY.
(SHELL SHOCK BOOGIE)

VIDEO: U2 Live; MIDNIGHT EXPRESS; BIRDY; ANGEL HEART; PINK FLOYD-THE WALL.
Yet another dark and moody song and the Alan Parker dedication rolls on...
68: STAY (FAR AWAY, SO CLOSE!)
(DO ANGELS HAVE HEARTS?)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; STAY TUNED; PINK FLOYD-THE WALL; ONCE WERE WARRIORS; Russ-TV! puppets, NZ-TV news, ANGEL HEART; BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD...
This is my favorite song from ZOOROPA not so dark as the past few music videos. It's another song about hitting the bottle. The Alan Parker dedication winds down...
69: SOME DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS.
(BONO THINKS HES ELVIS)

VIDEO: U2 Clips/Live; PINK FLOYD-THE WALL; Elvis Presley from NZ-TV; Russ-TV!
Bono thinks hes Elvis?... what with the black leather outfit, dyed black here and closing the ZOO-TV gigs with the song CANT HELP FALLING IN LOVE, Elvis is a big influence on a lot of bands and singers, U2 is but one of them...
70: BABYFACE.
(MY TWO LITTLE GIRLS)

VIDEO: U2 Clip, Russ-TV!
This video stars my two daughters: Lisa Marie and Diana Kimberley at home on the farm we lived on from April 1989 until September 1998 and around the country of New Zealand. Making guest appearances are my friends children... and why not, kids bring so much happiness if you treat them as people and friends and not something you own, try and own them and you'll lose them (a bit of free advise there).
71: CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE. (with Elvis Presley)
(HAIL THE KING)

VIDEO: U2 Clip, TVNZ with a big fan of Elvis.
This is from the HONEYMOON IN VEGAS soundtrack, it wasnt used in the film which wasnt much of a film anyway... It replaces the song "The Wanderer" which was sung by Johnny Cash.... "U2: MOVING PICTURES" is about songs sung and played by U2.
72: SLOW DANCING.
(THE DANCE OF LIFE)

VIDEO: U2 Live; TV Documentary with time lapsed photography.
This song was written for Willie Nelson... I hope you like it.
(B-Side Single from "STAY, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE! The Live Format)
73: I''VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN. (with Frank Sinatra)
(AN ITCH YOU CAN'T SCRATCH)

VIDEO: Bono/Frank Sinatra Clip; BURKES BACK YARD; NZTV NEWS and ADVERTS; Russ-TV!; THE MASK; A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS; WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT.
This is a bad taste video... why? because I felt like a change and you try coming up with different ideas for over 100 songs!
Note: Bono wanted to do a duet of THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING but Frank said no...
(B-Side Single from "STAY, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE!
The Swing Format)
74: LEMON. (BAD YARD CLUB REMIX)
(SOUR AS CHRIST'S FOOT)

VIDEO: U2 Clip/Live; Russ-TV!; BEYOND 2000.
I like this tune, I also like the video I have made here... which was put on the hard-drive of my PC and split into scenes (around 40) with "VirtualDub" and I cropped then expanded the picture to make it full screen because I really didn't like the wide-screen format, it was to televison what Beta-Max was to the VCR market.
(B-Side Single from "STAY, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE! The Swing Format)
75: Bonus Video: SILENT NIGHT.

VIDEO: Russ-TV! family meet U2 in Christchurch on 29th Nov. 1993.
One of the highlights of my life, better than winning Lotto (?). I met Edge for the second time and Bono for the first time.. The children got their autographs and Bono was saving his voice but he spoke to Lisa and Diana. In the ZOO-TV show in Christchurch on the 1st of December 1993 he dedicated LOVE IS BLINDNESS to all the people he met in Christchurch especially the Princess. He must have been talking about Diana, cos he asked her what her name was then asked me how to spell it... how cool can ya get?
(Another song from the FREE SKC Christmas CD) (This song was not written by U2)

76: WHO'S GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES? (TEMPLE BAR REMIX)
(IF YOU CAN'T WIN... CHEAT)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; TVNZ SPORT ON ONE; TV3 NEWS.
This is a sporty video it features some great horses including KIWI, LUXURY LINER, INKY LORD, and the greatest in my opinion: CHOKIN, the first 2yo horse of the year and the first horse to break 4 mins for the 3200m stand. One of the girls boxing is my sister... and poor old Mike Tyson, fame and money can't change everybody!
(B-Side Single from "WHOS GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES)
77: DESIRE. (PROMO REMIX)
(SCI-FRIED)

VIDEO: U2 Clips/Live; TERMINATOR; ROBOCOP; BLADERUNNER; NZTV NEWS; R18 VIDEO; THE HITCHER; Russ-TV!; TERMINATOR 2; FREDDIES DEAD; BRAINDEAD.
One and only track I used the Video Enhancer on... this is not a personal computer generated effect. I bought this bloody enhancer thinking it'd improve the picture quality for the editing on VHS tape, but it didn't, this effect was the only use I had for it. This is a very rare song only orginally released to radio stations but there's always somebody ready to rip you off, I hope you didn't get ripped off obtaining these video compact discs. This is my favorite music video I made for "U2: Moving Pictures", equal with the next.
(from the Bootleg album U2 ULTRA RARE TRAX)
78: UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD. (ULTRA-HOT RAZOR CUT)
(WON'T BE HERE FOREVER)

VIDEO: U2 Clips/Live; SCHINDLERS LIST; TV DOCO ON WORLD WAR 2; 60 MINS; BRAINDEAD; TERMINATOR 2.
As I said this is my favorite video, well equal favorite... this is a powerful song and the video suits it I feel... I lightened it up at the end so you are not left with dark thoughts and in a bad mood...
(from the Bootleg album U2 ULTRA RARE TRAX)
79: EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING. (PERFECTO REMIX)
(REALITY TV BABY)

VIDEO: U2 Clip/Live; A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR; REAL TV; NZTV ADVERTS; THE SIMPSONS; WWF; NASA ACCIDENTS.
This video features the death of Ayrton Senna and some pilots, also appearing are the Bush Wackers and Evel Knievel.
(from the Bootleg album U2 ULTRA RARE TRAX)
80: MYSTERIOUS WAYS. (SOLAR PLEXUS CLUB MIX)
(HARDLY CRICKET)

VIDEO: U2 Clips/Live; 1992 CRICKET WORLD CUP.
This is a funny video that features the New Zealand cricket team called the "YOUNG GUNS" (now called the BLACK CAPS) in fine form, that is before they played Pakistan... the only team that beat New Zealand and knocked them out of the Cup. It features Martin Crowe who won player of the cup, (Great player... Shit commentator) Andrew Jones, Mark Greatbatch, Dean Jones etc.

81: THE LOUNGE FLY MIX.
(BIG BOYS DO CRY)

VIDEO: U2 Live; 1992 CRICKET WORLD CUP; RUBY WAX; NZTV NEWS; BLOOPERS SHOW; MAKING OF TRUE LIES; THE SIMPSONS.
Just a continuation of the theme, I tried to make each clip unique, hope you enjoy these remixes...
(B-Side to the single THE FLY)
82: LEMON. (PERFECTO REMIX)
(CITRUS MUCK UP)

VIDEO: U2 Clip; Russ-TV!; NZTV ADVERTS; THE SIMPSONS; A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR; MR BEAN; BURKES BACK YARD
Hard to believe that "Lemon" was a song about Bono's mother (wearing a lemon dress in some home movies) This clip has a few of Russ-TV!'s home movies made 'specially for this video! Again like the "Bad Yard Club Mix" this was cropped and stretched in "VirtualDub".
(B-Side Single from "STAY, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE! The Swing Format)
83: GOD PART II. (THE HARD METAL DANCE REMIX)
(OH MY GOD'S)

VIDEO: U2 Clips/Live; TERMINATOR 2; Russ-TV!; SHOCKER; FALLING DOWN; WHEEL OF FORTUNE; NZTV STUFF; SILENCE OF THE LAMBS; LIVE AID; ROD STEWART, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN CLIPS.
Oh my God... I love U2, Rod, Elvis and the Boss (Bruce Springsteen) You get to see Rusty's old house (during the line "I don't believe in riches, but you should see where I live" where the first 6 and a bit disc's were edited... I lived there from April 1989 to September 1998.
(from the Bootleg album U2 ULTRA RARE TRAX)
84: LADY WITH THE SPINNING HEAD. (EXTENDED DANCE REMIX)
(GIVE ME A BUZZ)

VIDEO: ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, TV DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE FLY.
A pretty silly video but I'm a silly guy!
(B-Side Single from "EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING)
85: NUMB. (RUSS-TV! VIDEO REMIX)

VIDEO: U2 Video Single.
I originally just chucked this on to fill up the VCD. I didn't edit it... but come time for VideoCD conversion in February 2004 I decided to use Adobe After Effects software to shrink the video and add a bit of timely advice, just things that I beLIEve in... or NOT...
(Remix single from "NUMB video single)
"U2: Moving Pictures"
A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 07
86: UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD.
(THIS AIN'T NO DISNEY)

VIDEO: Russ-TV! COMPUTER ANIMATION.
My first attempt at PC animation, its not a great video, the animation was made with software just designed for morphing, it was a demo version that came on a CD-rom with a computer magazine. The face that is distorted (with Paint Shop Pro 3.0) is one female. The video was recorded off the computer screen with my video camera. It's here because I wanted a permanent copy of it.
(Song from "ACHTUNG BABY)
87: BILLY BOOLA. (with Gavin Friday)
(HIPPY STYLE)

VIDEO: U2 Clip/live; IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER; JURASSIC PARK; Music video's.
This is an idiotic song (but I like it) from the soundtrack to IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER that was in the film for all of a few seconds. The video was recorded off a 14 inch Color TV using my camcorder (video camera) I wanted to give the video the big screen slightly out of focus look...
88: IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER. (with Gavin Friday)
(SEE THE MOVIE)

VIDEO: U2 Clip/Live; IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER.
Also from the soundtrack, this was recorded the same way as BILLY BOOLA it is a great song too... The song did have its own music video but I've never seen it.
(also from the "IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER" soundtrack)
89: HALLELUJAH.
(CAN'T THEY TAKE A JOKE?)

VIDEO: NATURAL BORN KILLERS.
The music of Leonard Cohen was used in "Natural Born Killers" so I decided to use the film in this music video... This movie was and still is banned in many countries... and a first here in New Zealand was when it played on SKY-TV (pay television) Sky got so many complaints they had to withdraw the film from screening again. It makes me wonder how these moaners got away with it, can't they switch their television off or change the channel?
(Edited on 12-13th June 2002) (from the album TOWER OF SONGS" a tribute to Leonard Cohen)
90: JESUS CHRIST.
(...IS IN THE GROUND)

VIDEO: 1995 RUGBY WORLD CUP.
This was the first REAL rugby world cup final, the 1987 and 1991 cups didn't have South Africa... South Africa (aka: Springboks) scored a TRY in this game but the Ref says the South African player was held up, this was bullshit because you can see him dive over the tryline and score. Then of course the Ref could have awarded a penalty try when the cheat Sean Fitzpatrick collapses the srum with the South African's hot on attack as they were for all of the first half.... so the score should have been higher than 15-12, in fact if it wasn't for a piss poor umpire and no TV replays it woulda been an ass kicking. Mind you Andrew Mertens missed untolled drop-kicks... The New Zealand (aka: All Blacks) team aren't as good as they were in the first World Cup of 1987 when they were unbeatable, but since they dropped Buck Shelford the A.B's have been ratshit, kind of justified I feel... Fitzpatrick lost more games than ever and Laurie Mains who coached the A.B's in '95 was the pits as a coach, a bunch of losers...
In fact Mains and John Hart destroyed the All Blacks (Hart with his 10 man rugby) I used to support the All Blacks but these two put me off the team... it was BORING to watch... Most (but not all) Kiwi's think of the All Blacks as a sort of God like thing (I support South Africa). The fact is the All Blacks took 3 world cups to beat the Springboks in a World Cup match, that was in 2003 and the win wasn't convincing, in fact it was so unconvincing that Australia beat New Zealand in the semi-final to send them home with their tails between their legs yet again, the bookies got it wrong again!
The funniest thing of all was NZ rugby had the ARROGANCE to organise a victory parade BEFORE the 1995 rugby world cup even started... the team was full of arrogant players and bosses, as for the food poisoning.. Hahaha it's bullshit... All Black supporters won't like these two video's! (Both video's were edited on 12th June 2002)
(from the album A VISION SHARED" a tribute to Woody Guthrie)
91: MOTHERS OF THE DISAPPEARED. (RAINBOW REMIX)
(BIG BOY'S DON'T CRY... UNLESS THEY LOSE)

VIDEO: 1995 RUGBY WORLD CUP.
Rubbing salt into the wounds... For those "EXPERTS" that say the A.B's were the best team at the world cup in 1995... BULLSHIT.
South Africa beat Australia in the opening game (something that NZ has failed to do at any world cup to date (2003)) then they beat France in a dynamic and dramatic semi-final, these two teams were in the next world cup final in 1999, where New Zealand lost to again to South Africa in the play off for 3rd and 4th place. And shock horror Australia did it again in 2003 by beating the A.B's and making the final against England. There was no way New Zealand was the best team in 2003 either... they were average against Wales who managed 37 points and made many mistakes in their 29-9 win over a good young South African team who should shine in the future once they get rid of the dead wood and the coaches that made them train in the nude.
(Song was downloaded from a U2 site on the internet)
92: SAVE THE CHILDREN.
(BUT WHO WILL SAVE YOU?)

VIDEO: TV Documentaries: Healing The Hurt and Scars Of War.
If any body knows who features in this duet with Bono let me know...
(Edited on 11th June 2002)
(from the album INNER CITY BLUES a tribute to Marvin Gaye)
93: LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL. (with Quincey Jones, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder)
(TIGHT UNIFORMS, NO TIT)

VIDEO: 1996 OLYMPICS: Gymnastics show,
One of my girls had a crush on Russian gymnast Alexei Nemov so to get him into "U2: Moving Pictures" was important, he even features on the VCD cover! (Edited on 10th June 2002)
(from the album "THE Q'S JOOK JOINT" by Quincey Jones)
94: HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME.
(YOU'RE DOOMED)

.
VIDEO: Russ-TV! COMPUTER ANIMATION.
My second attempt at animation on the computer, this was made with a computer Morphing program too. DOOM is the greatest computer game made, so I made my video like playing Doom... This too was recorded with my video camera off the computer screen (didn't have VCD gear and a CD Writer back in 1994-5)
(from the soundtrack to BATMAN FOREVER)
95: BAD.
(ARE THERE WORSE THINGS YOU COULD DO?)

VIDEO: U2 Live; WHERE THE DAY TAKES YOU.
This is a black and white video to add to the mood of the song which is one of my favorites. It was at the LIVE AID concert in 1985, when U2 played this song, that the world sat up and took notice of Bonos passion...
The song is about drugs, and I personally think ANY mind altering substance is the root of evil, NOT all but MOST.
(from the album "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE")
96: WITH OR WITHOUT YOU.
(DID I SPOOK YA?)

VIDEO: U2 Live; GHOST.
This song and video go together like a hand in a glove. This is a lot better than the James Dean version used on VCD 1 of U2: MOVING PICTURES. This is a great song that will play at my funeral. When I made the video the hard part was getting the drums in time.
(from the album "THE JOSHUA TREE")
97: ALL I WANT IS YOU. (dedicated to Arnold Schwarzenegger)
(ARNIE FOR PRESIDENT)

VIDEO: U2 Live; DIRTY DANCING; TERMINATOR 2; TWINS; CONAN THE BARBARIAN; PREDATOR, TOTAL RECALL... etc.
Arnie baby is the greatest action hero of all time. Again a black and white video because the color wasnt the best in some of the video cassettes I used to edit the clip (played them too many times).
(from the album "RATTLE AND HUM")
98: SO CRUEL.
(THE BANG GANG)

VIDEO: U2 Live; POINT BREAK.
Not much to say about this my favorite song from ACHTUNG BABY except I hope you like it too...
99: STAY, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE.
(SPEED UP THE LIGHTS GONNA TURN RED)

VIDEO: U2 Clip/Live; THE MAKING OF SPEED.
Color off in this video because the U2 video was in monochrome (black and white) I tried to make it look like Dennis Hopper was singing the song too, I didnt do a bad job either, this is one of my favorite videos..
100!: MISS SARAJEVO. (with LUCIANO PAVAROTTI)
(THE QUEEN OF OUR HEARTS)

.
VIDEO: Princess Diana TV Show.
I for one really admired Diana Spencer, so much so that I named my second daughter Diana, this is my tribute to the Princess of the People.
(from the album by PASSENGERS: ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKS 1)
"U2: Moving Pictures"
A Musical Video Oddity... VideoCD: 08
101: POP MUZIK. (POP MART MIX) (with M)
(THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK)

VIDEO: U2 Live in 1997. various music video's.
I hope you like the dude filling in for Bono on the vocal part of the video! I was going to use the edited "DEMO MIX" of the song but that was just a cheap way out of the responsibility of editing a 9 minute song.
(from the single CD "LAST NIGHT ON EARTH)
102: MOFO.
(MUDDA F**KIN' ROCK AND ROLL!)

VIDEO: U2 Live in 1997-98, A Year In Pop, The Simpsons (episode 200).
This video, although it looks simple took some time to edit as there are four edits on the screen, each the same lenght, I put this one together in Adobe After FX, there is an explicit mix of this song where Bono use the F word a few times, I rather like it.
103: GONE.
(FOR MICHAEL HUTCHENCE)

VIDEO: Various INXS music video's.
This is another dedication to a dead person, it came in three's in 1997, Michael, Princess Diana and Versace and three different types of death, suicide, accident and murder, but could they all be murder's? This has a bit of the funeral too.
104: DO YOU FEEL LOVE?
(YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT SHAKE?)

VIDEO: PULP FICTION.
How could I include "Natural Born Killer's" and not "Pulp Fiction"? Why the critic's never bagged this one too is beyond my imagination, it's just as blood thursty as "Killers" and doesn't have a great message for the viewers of the film. As I have throughout this production, I changed the the mood of the film so that people that view "U2: Moving Pictures" and haven't seen the films will get a different ending than the original film, I repeat that I hope this makes people go out and rent or buy the film... not a bloody pirated copy but!!!
105: LAST NIGHT ON EARTH.
(RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS)

VIDEO: RUN LOLA RUN.
The version of the U2 video of this song that screened in New Zealand had titles ie: words explaining the story going on in the video. The version on the DVD of "THE BEST OF U2: 1990-2000" didn't have them...
I was going to use the sci-fi hit movie "Independance Day" for this tune but I thought this was better, and again I "fiddled" with the ending..
106: STARING AT THE SUN.
(THIS IS WHAT YOU GET FORREST)

VIDEO: FORREST GUMP.
This was a hard song to make a video for. The song is my favorite U2 video but I didn't use it as I thought the effect I was trying to create wouldn't work with the U2 music video edited in.
My favorite U2 lyric in this song: "in the shade of a willow tree, creeps a crawling over me..." and the worst "breaking on my back like a beach..." what the hell does that mean, what else ryhmes with Reach? Peach, Teach, not many options I guess...
Thanks to Hershey's for the closing graphic...
107: DISCOTHEQUE.
(THIS AIN'T NO DISCO.. I HOPE)

VIDEO: SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, U2 Video.
There was only ONE option for visual's for this song, the greatest movie about disco... (I saw it 10 times @ the movies in the '70's and have the DVD) and I edited it how you wouldn't expect on what you'd seen on the first eight Video Disc's...
108: MIAMI.
(TAKE A NAP KID)

VIDEO: THE CHASE.
This is a funny song so I had to make a funny video, I had this movie picked for "U2: Moving Pictures" the first time I heard the song. I couldn't use "Miami Vice" even tho the guitar sounds just like the theme tune to that show. It's of amusement to me that U2 sang about Miami in 1997 and New York in 2000 'cos in 20001 some terrorists trained to fly in Miami and reeked havoc in New York on 11th September 2001... a prophet is our Bono...
109: THE PLAYBOY MANSION.
(HUGH'S A PERVERT)

VIDEO: Inside The Playboy Mansion, Jerry Springer.
Here we have the 3rd installment of television porn, and I said there would only be one... I lied, plus U2's music is sometimes, in fact often, about sex... it's funny how TV stations use documentaries as an avenue for screening human beings private parts, I believe the people that make these programmes are in fact closet perverts, but thanks! at least I got some television to use in this music video.
This show screened on pay-TV and NOT the Playboy Channel, I would NEVER pay for that crap. We have that channel in New Zealand but it's $10 per half hour program which is funny 'cos the perverts that watch it to tug-off to, would blow in twenty seconds! No doubt they would love this video, I do... PS: I edited it with the lights on... LOL! Mind you... are you still recovering from "Salome"?
110: PLEASE.
(WANT A SLAP BITCH?)

VIDEO: ONCE WERE WARRIORS. U2 music video.
Another song that I had to use a certain movie for.... and this is it!! I wish the song was longer than 5 minutes as there was so much good footage I had to leave out... You gotta see this movie, I got it for $15 ($7 American) on DVD, but remember I did not and would not rip DVD's... anyway I am not sure they are for "home use only"... It remains my favorite New Zealand movie, beating "Lord Of The Rings" and "The Quiet Earth".
111: IF GOD WILL SEND HIS ANGELS.
(BE MY GUARDIAN ANGEL?)

VIDEO: TRADING PLACES, U2 music video.
I like this one, I usually do! There is only one video in this music video oddity that I'm not happy with ("With Or Without You" on Disc One) There are 63 edits in the movie part and the U2 video at the bottom was a bastard to edit because it was for the CD single version of the song, it took about 12-13 hours to edit this bugger and 20 minutes to render in Adobe After FX, I could not have edited this tune or "Mofo" either on a VCR like I did on most of these video Disc's.
112: IF YOU WEAR THAT VELVET DRESS.
(BIGGER THAN GOD?)

VIDEO: TITANIC. (1997)
Editing a 3 hour film into 5 and a half minutes is actually quite easy, I had the lyrics handy and played and captured the video that I thought would be good for each line in the song. Then I cropped and cut it in "VirtualDub" and loaded each snippet into "ULEAD Media Studio" and it shows the time taken by each segment, in seconds, if it was out of sync I just made the segment of video longer or shorter by a few frames, I found the job easier as I progressed through the production of Disc 8, this only took 3-4 hours to edit.
113: WAKE UP DEADMAN.
(ADIOS AMIGO'S)

VIDEO: Russ-TV!.
The last song and I didn't want to use a movie for this song because that would cheapen it. I got a very good friend of mine to appear in the video!
This was recorded on a video camera on 1st October 2004 at around 3am. Then it was captured to my computer and the video was run through "POSER 4" a 3d animation package using the sketch designer and it took 4 hours but I wasn't happy with the result, so I ran the video through "Virtual Dub" and applied some cool filters and this is the result.
I was so happy it was all over.... 2-3 weeks to capture and edit the "Pop" album was a good way to pass the last days of winter.
Will there be any more Video Disc's in this collection? Who knows? I doubt it, I covered U2 in the 20th Century and I originally planned to do each album 10 years after its release, "POP" was edited 7 years after its release. So it will be some time before I do "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" because I am satisfied with what I have done so it could be the end of my efforts... plus I have a 3d movie to make, see it in 3-5 years! Bye bye
