Wombats
- Ray Pike (VIC), Roy Farren (WA), Chris Jones and Tim Heming (NSW)On the day, the longest single flight was 63 minutes by Ray Pike using Robbe S400 7.2V Simprop 6:1 gearbox and Graupner 14x9.5 prop. This 63 mins is actually one of the WORST times done by Ray who could clock over 3 hours with the model (different motor/cells) (an Oz duration record !).
Brett Solanov managed 40
minutes for the "Seagulls' best flight" with a model with much higher wing loading.
Results after 6 hours - Wombats 16 launches, Seagulls 22 launches.
1st: Wombats
2nd:Seagulls
Open Electric Glider
Four competitors managed only two flights each.
Cold stable air from the South West to South East dampened any activity and
turned the last day into a pumpkin. Ray Pike showed the way when he chose to fly
late on the first day and early on day two whilst there were thermals around.
1st: Ray Pike of Oxley (Model :
Freudenthaler Surprise III)
2nd: Steve Mutch (Model: Ricochet)
3rd: Chris Jones
Outdoor Scale
(Friday)

. Skyhawk - Bill Hamilton (score 234)
. ME163 Komet - Mani Riederich (score 218)
. Spitfire - Tim Heming (score 145)
The final scores were determined from aggregate points awarded by 3 judges for SOS appearance and scale realism in executing a series of flying manoeuvres.
1st: Shane McMillan
2nd: Wayne Hadkins
3rd: Bill Halmilton.
7 Cell Glider
(Saturday and Sunday)
Always a popular event, 23 pilots entered for the 7 Cell Glider contest. The
rules for this contest are maximum air time within a 5 minute working time and a
spot landing within a 15 or 30m circle. Motor run time is deducted from the
final score. A large variety of models, ranging from built up balsa construction
/ can motor to rapid composite 7 Cell F5B brushless motor gliders, competed for
the prizes.
The winning model was piloted by Michael Colston of Epping (NSW). Second place
went to Ray Pike of Oxley (VIC) losing only by a whisker on count back to
dropped scores. Third place went to John Rourke of Killara (NSW).

R/C Electric Scramble
The rules for R/C scramble are to achieve as much
air time as possible within 45 minutes of working time. Each flight must be
longer than 30 sec but shorter than 120 sec. The model must be returned to base
prior to re-launching for the next flight.
With the late exit of 3 contestants, there were 5 entrants left in this contest. The winner was Wayne Hadkins of Wagga (NSW) who achieved 40 flights and earned 2438 points. Second was Shane McMillan of Albion Park, NSW (2381 points, 22 flights) and third was Peter Pine of Moree, NSW (2344 points, 22 flights). It appears that Waynes contest winning strategy included a large number of short flights and being able to catch his model after each flight.

Electric Pylon Racing
Easter Monday hosted all classes of electric pylon racing. Pylon racing
is subdivided into 2 broad classes - 4 Minute and F5D. The 4 minute class is
further subdivided into 3 classes - Speed 400, Can and Open. The 4 minute
classes are restricted to 7 cells and. designed to allow entry level
participation. Of all the events run on the
weekend, pylon racing offers pilots as well as the spectators fast, close action
and often an exciting finish. There were no mid air collisions. but four models
crashed into the ground during the day. Pilots competing in more than one
class found little time to rest between rounds and turn around battery charging
proved to be a problem for some.
Speed 400 Pylon
Speed 400 pylon consists of flying as many laps of
a measured course as possible in four minutes. This year the Speed 400 models
flew the same 180m course as the F5D models. There were 6 entries in this class,
but only 4 completed the event due to crashes in the very first rounds. It
was noted that Mark Amadio flew his model for the first time ever recorded the
highest number of lap in any round.

Open 4 Minute Pylon
Open 4 Minute Pylon consists of flying as many
laps of a triangular course as possible in four minutes. The Open models fly the
same course as the F5D models. Due to the delayed start, only 3 rounds were
flown. There were 7 entries in this class. Speeds were much higher than
anticipated with some pilots using too large a prop and running out of charge
before the end of the race. Ray Pike set the pace with a best race score of 18
laps. David Whitten flew a lighter model using a 1250 mA pack at about 20A.
Although he could not match the pace of the front runners, he secured third
place with good, consistent flying.

FAI F5D Pylon
F5D Pylon consists of flying 10 laps of a 180x40m
triangular course as quickly as possible. Four rounds were completed and one
dropped. Results are total number of seconds to complete 3 rounds including
adding 10% for any pylon cuts.
David Johnson was fast but flew rather wide for fast times, although he improved by 44 sec by round 4. Ray Pike was consistent for a third place but was not able to match the pace of the two leaders. Gregg Voak and Brett Solanov who fought very hard for the lead for all 4 rounds, with neither pilot having a clear advantage. The last race between Gregg and Brett was very exciting with each pilot taking turns to lead. Brett finished in front by a very small margin but the honour for best raw score in any round went to Gregg with a time of 92 sec.
