| "Readers Are
Winners!" is the motto of Rush Springs Elementary and Middle School students
who have been participating in the Accelerated Reader Program this year.
The AR program is a reading program designed to help each child succeed
at reading on his or her own level. Students take a placement test, which
gives them the optimum reading levels for their ability. Books in the library
are coded with reading levels and are assigned a point value designated
by the AR program. After a student has completed a book, they take a test
on the computer to test their reading comprehension. Students are awarded
points based on their score on the test and the difficulty level of the
book.
Most of the classrooms
have assigned a reading point goal for the students. For example, the third
graders have a goal of 12 points each semester; the fourth grade, 25 points
per semester; and the middle school students, 50 points per semester. Many
of the classes give an AR grade at the end of each nine-week period based
on whether the student reached their goal.
High school students
have also begun using the Accelerated Reader program, making it a schoolwide
program in grades K-12. Through grant funds the library was able to upgrade
their existing software which added a voice option to the testing program.
Now beginning readers have the choice of having the test read to them.
The library has the AR reading list online so that students can able to
check the list of AR titles from any computer with internet access. Just
