ronstadt is the name shared by a naval fortress and a city, built by Peter the Great on the island Kotlin in the Gulf of Finland 30 km (19 miles) northern west of St. Petersburg to protect young St. Petersburg from naval attacks.
Powerful defense system was built over 200 years. It consists of 17 sea forts on man-made islands, coastal forts and artillery batteries and fortress itself. Until 1997 Kronstadt was a Navy base of the Russian Baltic Fleet, closed for visitors.

Kronstadt has unique architecture, parks, engineering constructions and fortifications: a unique self-draining XVIII century dry dock named after Peter the Great, canals, harbors, historic buildings of old trade port and Admiralty (XVIII-XIX century), fleet warehouses (XIX century), Naval Arsenal, Naval Cathedral, Summer Garden, Peter's Park, many monuments etc.
The most reliable way to reach Kronstadt is a private car or a public bus - either way it takes about 60 min. - the road goes over the dike (dam). On the way you can observe anti-flood constructions and seven Northern forts.
