KODAK E100VS and FUJI VELVIA

Comparison images on E100VS and Velvia. Lyth Hill, Shropshire. OM2n (Kodak), OM2sp (Fuji), both with 35mm Zuiko SC.

Caveat: unfortunately the scans are not necessarily accurate reproductions from the original slides.
E100VS
Velvia

A slightly hazy day with intermittent sun between the clouds. Examination of the slides show very similar colour balance, though I have to admit I prefer the shadow/midtone reproduction of E100VS. It seems to pull more information out of the lower tones without sacrificing the highlights. As well as having better detail in brightest parts of the white clouds, E100VS has better interpretation of the sky colour. Velvia has exaggerated the bluey nature of the clouds.

One note: the Velvia scan hasn't retained all the highlight detail in the slide. In fact, the scanner didn't like Velvia (and it really couldn't read the Kodachrome slide of this scene at all!).

Below is a detailed section from a full-res scan (2400dpi?). Obvious difference in grain, allowing Velvia to provide better apparent edge sharpness. This is obvious along the top of the distant hill against the sky. In fact, E100VS appears almost as sharp.

Colours are, as mentioned before, very similar, though Velvia has made the sky just above the distant hillside a deeper, more saturated blue.

Conclusion

  • E100VS more pleasing rendition, especially in higher contrast scenes
  • E100VS easier to scan
  • Velvia finer grained and sharper
  • Subtle differences lost - a combination of cheap scanner and untrained operator
