We have all been there... Camping, hunting, fishing or hiking and felt a very unsettling feeling... Am I alone? Very few people want to explore this feeling or waht exactly gives us this feeling. It lies within all of us to conjure up our wild imaginations and sometimes manifest them into what we think is real like that noise off in the distance or that ominous shadow that seems to be moving. Have you ever asked yourself, maybe you did see something? Most peopel will dismiss the idea and there are a few people who take it a little to far..
I want to take a deeper look into what goes bump in the night and maybe debunk a few urban legands while im at it. One imperticular,                        Big Foot.
The Expedition to "The Swamps"
I recently went on a privatly funded trip to a mountain called Granite Butte. This located just NW of Helena, MT. I had heard stories of hunters who have seen, smelled and heard this creature in a place that is only known as the "Swamps" These swamps as they are called are located about three miles west of the summit and down some of the most unusual terrain I have yet known. The decent starts with a sloping drop off into the tree line. It is a rocky and wind blown area. As I went further the wind stopped and all I could hear was silence. A very peaceful silence where the only sound being made was my boots crunching leaves and pinecones. It wasnt a very thick country more like a grassy field with patches of trees scattered every which way untill the mountain began to drop again. It then leveled off and became very overgrown with Pine, aspen trees and willows. I noticed the ground beneath me changing from a rocky or hard packed dirt to grassy and almost wet. As I pressed on the ground became saturated in black mud a puddles of water. This being very unusual given the size of the area and the location. I stopped to gather some data on the landscape. I recorded the changing of the ground. The types of trees in the area and weather or not they had been defaced or scratched in any way. There was some indication of local big game but nothing out of the ordinary. There was nothing in this area that I could see that was odd or inconclusive. Except the odor I noticed when first enetering the swamps. I had been in many swamps and marshes around Montana and have become familiar to the smell of decay that occompanies this kind of land formation. This odor came and went in very slow icrements of about ten minutes. Every time I smelled it, it came from a different direction. I wondered why I could smell it in one place and not the other. If I had let my mind fun I could have imagined how I was smelling somthing that was circling me, stocking me. It wasnt. Do to the trees being a natural wind breaker air gets circulated through the trees and has no designated path. If I were to get about 20 - 25ft high the airstream would be going in one direction. So the only thing that proved to be out of the ordinary was the odor which turned out to be the swamp fumes ciculating through the thick trees. This of course is no evidence at all that proves Big Foot to be a myth.
Sitings and Evidence of a Big Foot
The people I had interviewed about this subject all shared a remarkably similiar story. One that describes a very tall bulky white human like looking animal that always runs not in fear but almost to try and stay undetected. Could there be a reason for the animals instictive fleeing when encountered by a human? Or is it just some peoples way of saying "I saw one but you probably wont" The first story comes from a man who wishes to remain anonomous. He acounts himself and his younger brother hunting on horse back about some thirty years ago. "I was on my horse ahead of my brother hunting for elk. Well he was I dont like shooting inocent animals like deer or elk hell I got money if want meat some cow tastes hell of a lot better then game. Anyway, we were just coming up to the swamps when we heard a noise in the trees about thirty yards ahead. My brother then joined me and we stared silently in the trees. We heard a branch break and saw some snow fall off a tree. We looked to our side and saw not thirty yards off a tall white thing running through the trees. He ran fast but combersome like a gorilla only standing straight up. We noticed the branch he broke when we walked up to the tree. It was about three inches in diameter and I had to hold my gun by the barrel on horse back just to reach the spot where it was broken. We ve never been back to the swamps again."
Two other hunters I talked to gave similiar stories of what they saw. So could this be enough evidence to suggest that there is a Big Foot on Granite Butte? Or just some people trying to get some attention? If there is solid evidence Im going to try and find it.
Explainations against Big Foots Existance
Studing what frightens people in the wilderness has produced an entirely different outcome then I had previously imagined. Around 40% of the people said they fear things that they cant see or creatures that are not documented such as Big Foot. So why do people fear what they havent seen? There is no concrete proof that Big Foot exists yet alone has attacked anyone. One individual said he is less afraid of something that he can pridict then something he cant. The human imagination is one explaination against the belief. Probably 99% of the belief. What the eye sees and what the brain sees are two entirly different things. The eye might see a tall white shape moving fast through the trees that is infact some snow falling from a tree. The brain doesnt know what it was so it supplies an explaination for it, Big Foot. It could be possible that what Mr. Anonomous heard and saw was the wieght of some snow which got to heavy for the branch and snapped sending the snot on a rapid but bulky decent to the ground. One things for sure untill this fact or fiction story is proven either true or false I will still look for evidence that supports both sides of the story.
