Progress You filled this world with crystal ogres Forever stretching to embrace the sky And forever falling short, for the sky has run away. You replaced it with aluminum siding Hoping those of us who cared wouldn't notice the difference You summoned more ogres to block out the sun For once beautiful crystal has turned into clay You filled this world with the spouts of angry whales Gushing forth the mists of death Now no one dares to play the Ahab, For fear of the disapproval of those who love The bitter-sweet scent of profit Above all else You don't like snakes So you had them all come before you And you killed them You ran them over And flattened them Stretching them out To become smooth pathways through the wilds That used to be home You brought others on these paths too To walk the road of progress with you You say you're moving forward Toward the future And if I don't join the great parade I too will get left behind in the wilds At the mercies of the terrible creatures who live there I will gladly be left behind If it means freedom From society's great accomplishments Leave me my forests My fields My oceans To explore My friends The spirits The monsters The stuff of fantasy you say Only because you are so blinded by your Ambitions Accomplishments Progress You can not see what I see every day You will not find happiness But progress is getting progressively faster And now it is coming my way Do I run Fight Or die ?
