"It's a long race but patience and discipline will get you there." - WOM
Brick 63 - Friday was a day of rest and recovery from a humiliating defeat at the hands of the slow.
Brick 64 - 8/2/03 - Shake out run in the morning before a day by the pool in NJ. Went to Sarah's cousins' house in White Plains. Got in bed by midnight but had to get up at 5:30 for the race on Sunday.
Brick 65 - 8/3/03 - Brutal half marathon in central park. 1:17:41. Ran the first 4 in 5:30 per mile. Dropped to about 6:15 at the end. Very hot humid day as last year but this year there were a lot more hills. The race started at 109th and the park drive, did one full loop, went up the hill tok the left on 102nd, back down the hill, back around the hills on 109th and then one more full loop back around to 102 for the finish. Brutal. NYRRC actually appologised for the course on their website. I think I finished 11th.
So sore 8/4 and 8/5. Worked til 12:30 at night on 8/5 and didn't run either day. Probably needed it.
Working under a new coach...
B66 -8/8/03 - 7 miles.
B-67 8/9/03 - Very Fun 9 miler at the Alaire horse trails.
B68 -8/10/03 - Hard 10-11 on the roads and the airport trail near Sarah's in Brick. 1:10 going pretty hard. A biker clocked me at "just under 11 mph". felt very sweaty at the end of this one.
B-69 8/11/03 - 7 miles fairly uptempo with strides at the end of the run. Went straight up 3rd Ave.
B70 8/12/03 - 9 miles with Krug, Dan and Joe at times. Went fast as shit at the end with McVeigh.
B71 8/13/03 - WNPC - Joe, Joe Swift and myself. I did just under 1 hour and loved every painfull minute of it. 10 miles easy.
B72 8/14/03 - 7 miles with Garvie. Easy day. No light s at night. The largest Blackout in American History.
Brick 73 8/15/03 - No running Friday due to no shower, lazyness and blackout. Saturday ran the city club champs. WU 19 min race 26:09 and CD 21. Mile splits were 5:23 10:42 15:45 21:00 (big hill mile). A fun race. finished 21st and Mawai won in 23:35. Crazy shite.
8/17/03 - Brick 74 - Did a 12-14 miler with Luke. Ran 1:24 in total. It was hot but we still cooked along pretty well considering.
8/18/03 - Dragged out Garvie and Sean for an inside loop. Ended up getting in 7+ miles. We raged at times dropping the pace as low as 5:00 per mile. We finished up the whole thing in about 42 minutes and we probably ran 7.5-8.
8/19/03 - Chill run with Conto. Ran 6:30 for the first 6 or so and then pickeed it up for the last 25 minutes back to Dormandie. All in all it was a good run. The HR was hovering in the 135-140 range for the first 30 min and after I picked it up I was around 150-155 and got up to 160 on the hill after 72nd street.
Brick 77 - 8/20/03 - WNPC - I was the punisher this week. Last week it was 28:40 to the 125th street cut off. This week it was 26:30 and I was the one pushing. I didn't quit at 125 either. Garvie and I pushed up Claremont and all through CU and the first loop of the park. The run sort of deterioriated after the first hills loop in the park due to intestinal and bladder problems. Garvie and I finshed up in 55 and we probably did close to 10.
Brick 78 - 8/21/03 - Did 51 minutes with Garvie, Conto and Scott. Felt pretty good considering the recent hammering. We went pretty slow the first half but picked it up slightly the second half. 7-8 total.
Brick 79 - 8/22/03 - Very chill 40 minutes. Ran up to the pier from work (about 30 minutes) took off the shoes and did 4 x 100 and some drills. Jogged back to the gym in 10 minutes or so. It was a miserably hot day.
Brick 80 - 8/23/03 - Home on the trails. Did 1:05 up the mountain and through the trails on the edge of the airport. Hammered the whole way and loved every minute of it.
Brick 81 - 8/24/03 - Home on the trails again. Had a nice 1:30 on the Paunskill trail. Started out at 6:30 pace for a mile and kept dropping it down til mile 10 when I was cruising at sub 5:50 until the finish. Probably in the neighborhood of 15.
Brick 82 - 8/25/03 - Ran45 minutes with John and Sean. Picked up Brian Class along the way and we all pestered him with questions about his training. He said at one point that he really can't do about 110 while working. Sean and I said our limit seemed to be about 65. Sean and John headed home at 45 min and I continued on for another 10 or so minutes and did an extra loop around the Top of the park and then bac to the apt.; Should have done strides. TNPC is tomorrow.
Brick 83 - 8/26/03 - Did a nice TNPC with Joe, John and Maury (4 or so). 1:05 in total. RAn the normal plus the long way around the bridal to 97th and then home. Averaged 150 for the whole thing but got up to 169 on the CP hills the first time around. It was a fun race.
Brick 84 - 8/27/03 - Wednesday - Did the first 40 min with John and then tacked on some hills and rounded it out to 1:05. Got in some strides on the squishy baseball fields in CP.
Brick 85 - 8/28/03 - Thursday - Very Slow 40 minutes. Hurting bad. Knee is sore. Need the orthodics back.
Brick 86 - 8/29/03 + Lazy 55 min on the streets of Newton.
Brick 87 - 8/30/03 - Good 1:14 on the trails between Newton and Andover. Pretty uptempo but nothing crazy. Felt a bit sluggish.
Brick 88 - 8/31/03 - Nice 1:12 in central park. 20 min with Brian and the rest on my own. Feeling pretty crappy and the knee is sore at the start.
Brick 89 - 9/1/03 - Hard run with Garvie. Maybe too hard. The knee was a little achy afterwards. 6 miles. Probably should have done more but we were both hung over from too many beers. Did a little circut training in the morning. 8 excercises 20 minutes including squats, leg press with calf extension, leg extensions, nautilus chest, nautilus soulders, nautilus tris and curls.
Brick 90 - 9/2/03 - Another hard run. 13+ miles. TNPC. Joe, John, Class and Pat all jumping in at times. Joe and I hamered about 5:40-50 pace for most of the first 10 miles and then we met up with Brian for the last 3. Good stuff.
Brick 91 - 9/3/03 - Backed off a bit today over the first half but finished up in the park fairly agressivly over the hills. Ran into Rosie on the hills which is never a good thing and he hammer Swift and I for about 4 miles before I trailed off with a throbbing knee. Sucks to be me. 1:01 and a litle over 10 I would have to guess.
Brick 92 - 9/4/03 - Zero on Thursday. Knee to sore to run. Hilly and very slow run around the neighborhood of PV on Friday. maybe o er eight maybe less than 8 hard to tell with the hills and the sluggishness.
Brick 93 - 9/6/03 - Warmed up on course of Race for Kids Sake. Ran the race and then cooled down on course. Ran 15:27 or there abouts. Second finisher was 17:41. Some little rolling hills but a good amount of flats. Didn't kill myself but a good effort.
Brick 94 - 9/7/03 - Warmed up 2+ miles. Ran 4:12 mile 59,2:01, 3:01 4:12?. Clock at finish line was wrng but so maybe the splits are off too. Cooled down with another 48 minutes. Slow to start but uptempo at the end.
Brick 95 - 9/8/03 - 60 min with Garvie. Less than 10 but probably right around 6 min pace for the last5 miles or so.
Brick 96 - 9/9/03 - 10 or so by myself in the park. Pretty low key.
Brick 97 - 9/10/03 - WO in the park. Did 8xcinder hill that leads up to the bridal from the extended bridal. Intervals ranged from 46-49 seconds with the last 2 being the second and 3rd fastest. HR got up to 172 at one point. Did about 40 5 minutes after the WO and the warm-up. Probably about 12 in total for the day.
Brick 98 - 9/11/03 - 10 with Garvie. Just over 1 hour.
Brick 99 - 9/12/03 - 4 with Garvie. Very tired and feeling like shit so I took it easy. Just ran 32 minutes along the east river.
Brick 100 - 9/13/03 - Did about 10 with Craig who hammered me. The legs were feeling like rocks today.
Brick 101 - 9/14/03 - ran 1:35 around the city and throught the park. Picked up mike for 30 minutes and nearly killed him with the humidity. I would figure those Greeks could handle the Mediteranian Style heat.
Brick 102 - 9/15/03 - The usual 1 hour run with Gravie.
Brick 103 - 9/16/03 - TNPC with McVeigh. The hammering got out of control on the Harlem Hill when a local tried to hang and I was forced to punish him up over the top. The pace never slacked after that and really asn't lacking before that. 26:30 to the turn around and there was a strong head wind. 1:03 back to Normandie.
Brick 104 - Rested Wednesday. 9/18/03 - Did hills with Johnny. 4xthe Harlem Hill. Ran from way down the bottom at the cross walk to the second traffic light way at the top. Intervals averaged from 1:45 to 1:51. Nearly puked at the end or the second and third ones. John was an animal and clobbered me on the last two.
Brick 105 - Struggling with some sore legs in Allamuchy. Ran 40 minutes up and down some pretty tough hills. Called it a day early due to laziness, boredom and the fact that it was too dark to see where I was going.
Brick 106 - Struggling again but this time on some trails and some even bigger hills. Ran in Allamuchy state park and thought I was going to die doing it. Ran about 1 hour 10 minutes but jogged a good portion of it. Resting up for the race tomorrow.
Brick 107 - So nervous for this little race but I guess there was no reason. The stomach was a bit upset with 4 drinks the night before and the late night with Sar. Luckily the race was at 11:30. Warmed up 3 miles, cooled down 3 mile+, ran a 16:11 5k at VCP which was 20 seconds faster than the year before and a much easier race. Won by about 200 meters but I had made most of that lead by the time I hit the cow path. The legs had no power on the hills but I think part of that was the 3 days of tough hills before the race. The flats felt great though.
9/22/03 - 9/27/03 -Fell off the wagon - Didn't run for 6 days! two work late excuses, 1 party excuse, 1 movie premiere excuse, 1 car buying excuse and 1 day of general laziness.
Brick 108 - Back in the saddle. Ran a descent 8 mile in the park early. Could sleep so I got up at 7:30 and went for a nice run. Hammered a bit at times but mostly that is from fresh legs.
Brick 109 - 9/29/03 - Gearing up for Japan. Knee is still hurting. Must see a doctor. Garvie and I did a 40 minute run around the park. Fairly up tempo at times. Probably betwen 6 and 7.
Brick 110 - 9/30/03 - Very uptempo run. dropped a 5:00 marked mile with Gravie in the middle and we weren't going slow before that. We also dropped a couple of 300-400 meter strides at the end. Fun stuff. Did the same exact run as the day before only this one was in 36 minutes. Probably between 6 and 7 but closer to 7.
After almost 6 weeks of relative inactivity I am back to working out seriously. Although the knee rehab is just starting I plan to keep at the lifting and the swimming for a month or two until I am back on my feet. The goal still being to run fast outdoors in the 1500.
11/5/03 - Lifted with Mike. Essentially circuit training.
11/6/03 - ran 2 miles and the knee blew up afterwards. Better wait til I get a couple of PT sessions in before I try that again.
11/7/03 - OOPS I didn't train for 3 months except for a bit of lifting and swimming.
